Over to you Carol….

Thank you so much for your support and for having me on your blog, Karen. I hope this is OK; I enjoyed writing it. xx

Release Day for A Summer of Second Chances: Hidden Stories and Family Secrets

Sometimes inspiration strikes in a single moment. That is what happened when I got the idea for A Summer of Second Chances. A few years ago, I was volunteering in my local charity shop when a donation was brought in. Nothing unusual there, of course. However, in the box, amongst other things, were a stack of photo albums. We always check the quality of donations, and so I flicked through the albums. They were all empty apart from a single photograph that had accidentally been left. The picture was of a woman holding a baby.

My mind started weaving stories. What if that photograph held a secret? Who were the people? What was the occasion? What happened before and after that picture? I made notes in my notebook, something I always did between customers. Charity shops, in general, are inspirational places; everything around you has its own tale to tell.

In A Summer of Second Chances, Ava Flynn runs a charity shop to support her mum’s beloved animal rescue centre – All Critters Great and Small. She is at a point in her life where she feels bogged down by the donations; Ava recognizes that they all have a story but sees that as a sign that the things around her have lived more than she has.

But Ava’s life is about to change in more ways than one. When Ava’s first love, Henry Bramlington, returns to the village of Dapplebury, it is not just the donation he makes to the shop that unlocks secrets and emotions related to her youth.

I enjoyed writing Ava’s journey of discovery. She grows as a person through the story. Part of that comes from gaining a greater understanding of her past. I am interested in family secrets – not least because my family has one. We all know there’s a secret. My granddad was very strict about us not trying to find out what it is, forbidding us to do our family tree. Hmm, now what would you do in that situation, many years after his passing?

ABOUT THE BOOK

A heart-warming romance full of love, friendship and four legged friends!

Does first love deserve a second chance?

Ava Flynn sometimes feels like the clothes donated to her charity shop have seen more life than her, but ‘maximum dedication for a minimal wage’ is what it takes to keep her mother’s beloved wildlife charity, All Critters Great and Small,

running especially in the village of Dapplebury, where business is certainly not booming.

But when Ava’s first love, Henry Bramlington, returns to the village, suddenly life becomes a little too eventful. Henry escaped Dapplebury many years before, but now he has the power to make or break the village he left behind All Critters Great and Small included. Can Ava trust the boy who ran away to give both her and her charity a second chance?

MY REVIEW

Having loved the first book in this series  – THE PURRFECT PET SITTER – I have been eagerly awaiting the latest installment and it’s been a real delight to revisit the wonderful characters again and to see what life throws their way this time!  Don’t worry if you haven’t read the first book thought, as this is very easy to read as a standalone!

Lisa and Felicity are best friends and life seems to be going smoothly for them both – or is it?!  Felicity is married with 3 children and has an idyllic relationship with Pete, but that could be about to change when his mum needs to move in to recooperate! Felicity has finds herself dealing with some unexpected stress in her life personally so it all begins to feel a little too much for her and as she tries to get fit for her first 5k run things may be getting a little too much!

Lisa on the other hand is beginning a new relationship but still has trust issues after past relationships and not helped by a friend of Nathan’s who seems determined to thwart him moving on with Lisa.  In amongst the chaos of her love life, she’s also dealing with her pet sitting business which always makes for extremely funny situations she finds herself in when dealing with  crazy animal antics and chaotic households she visits!

This book really mixes the fun with the more serious sides to life so well and gives such a great balanced read that always leaves you wanting more!  Felicity and Lisa are 2 women you instantly warm to, and can empathise with their dilemmas and insecurities and it was a gratifying and cheerful read – and I’m already itching to get my hands on the next installment – if there is to be one!!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Introducing Lisa Blake, the purrfect pet sitter! When Lisa Blake’s life in London falls apart, she returns to her hometown rebranding herself as ‘the purrfect pet sitter’ – which may or may not be false advertising as she has a rather unfortunate habit of (temporarily) losing dogs! But being back where she grew up, Lisa can’t escape her past. There’s her estranged best friend Flick who she bumps into in an embarrassing encounter in a local supermarket. And her first love, Nathan Baker, who, considering their history, is sure to be even more surprised by her drunken Facebook friend request than Lisa is. As she becomes involved in the lives of her old friends Lisa must confront the hurt she has caused, discover the truth about her mysterious leather-clad admirer, and learn how to move forward when the things she wants most are affected by the decisions of her past.

MY REVIEW

This was a book that made me smile throughout, and giggle a lot! Lisa has set up a pet sitting business and, despite the odd doggie mishap, it is her ideal job and allows her to connect with a wide range of people. One of her favourite clients is Winnie, with her little dog Jack, and they become really close and it was touching to read of their friendship that blossomed.

While Lisa has moved back, her old friend Felicity is feeling frazzled with 4 kids to look after! Her and Lisa fell out a number of years ago and when they meet up again they wonder why it has taken so long to reconnect as they used to be such close friends. With Lisa’s parents now living in France and other friends moving on, she’s begun to feel a little alone so she’s looking to find her place in the world again.

As well as reconnecting with Felicity, Lisa also finds herself reconnecting with an old flame and it is fascinating to see her old emotions resurface, and doubts creep in as to why she ever lost contact with those she used to love so dearly.

The antics of Lisa while she is pet sitting, alongside the laugh out loud moments that Lisa’s children bring to the book with their dinner table discussions were such a fun part of this book, and it was also so sweet how growing up had made them realise how much their friendship meant to one another, especially with both characters facing some tough times over the years.

A thoroughly entertaining read and hoping there’ll be more from these characters in the future!
