Release Day Post: Summer’s Christmas by Ella Cook

I love Christmas: the sentiment, the lights, the giving of gifts and gathering together of friends and family. The stories, the traditions, the food, the charity and emotions it inspires in people. I love it all. And most years, I feel a little sad that the good often fades with all the sparkle and tinsel.

For most people, the last year hasn’t exactly been the one we’d hoped and planned for – and that includes Christmas. Instead of gathering together with friends and family and celebrating per tradition – many people were in isolation, shielding, or lockdowns. And that’s where the inspiration for Summer’s Christmas came from: the idea of a little girl who missed Christmas.

Summer’s Christmas is, as the name suggests, a bit of a Christmas/Summer mashup which looks to bring the magic of the festive season to a summer’s day.

🎄🎄🎄

ABOUT THE BOOK

“Summer by name and summer by nature” – that’s how people describe Evelyn’s happy, outgoing daughter. Even if her favourite time of year is actually Christmas! But Summer has gone through more than any eight-year-old ever should, and that’s part of the reason Evelyn is leaving everything behind to return to her childhood home in the village of Broclington; just her, Summer and Summer’s best friend – a Shiba Inu dog called Tilly. Unsurprisingly, Evelyn is hesitant to let anyone else in, although local vet Jake Macpearson seems intent on winning her trust. When Evelyn receives the news that every mother dreads, it’s Jake who comes to the rescue. With the help of the Broclington community, could he be the man to bring festive magic to August, and make all of Evelyn and Summer’s Christmases come at once?”

ABOUT THE BOOK

Have the tissues ready for this beautifully written, emotional debut novel.

What if you became an outsider in your own life?
Jennifer Hughes doesn’t have an extraordinary life, but that doesn’t matter – she loves her family and enjoys her job as a teacher. In her eyes, her unextraordinary life is utterly perfect.

But then, in the blink of an eye, Jennifer finds herself cut off from everything she knew and loved, confined to a strange new world and forced to watch from a distance as her family and friends pick up the pieces.

Can Jennifer hold her perfect life together, even though she’s not living it herself?

MY REVIEW

This was a really touching and emotional read that explores the possibility of a loved one watching over you after they’ve passed, and trying to help you get back on the path of living a happy life despite being overwhelmed by grief and not being able to see a way forward.

Jennifer is killed in a car crash and the rest of her family survive so the story is told from her point of view, as well as through the eyes of her family left behind.  Both viewpoints share that anger, the shock, the disbelief in how their lives have changed and the battles that lay ahead.

From her point of view, you sense her frustration at the regrets, the injustice of it all and then the suffering of having to watch over her family as they try and move on.  Her husband David is the one who struggles the most and watching him return home without Jen was heartbreaking.  All those reminders of her dotted around, knowing she’ll never return.

What gives him comfort is the feeling that she is watching over him, even if his kids think he’s going mad with the way he starts acting, and that was the most touching thing about the story!  Those little things that make us feel like our guardian angel is taking care of things and keeping an eye out for us – just having that feeling that you’re not alone make all the difference.

A really striking story that will bring a tear to your eye and a warm glow to your heart!

#GuestPost BEYOND GREY by ELLA COOK #PublicationDay @RubyFiction @Ellacookwrites

Delighted to be joined on my Blog today by Ella Cook who is celebrating the  publication day of BEYOND GREY with Ruby Fiction!!

Over to you Ella….

Beyond Grey is my debut novel, and I’m incredibly pleased to be sharing it with you. It’s a sweet and touching love story with a twist: It starts long after the sunset and ‘happily ever after’ where most stories finish, and proves that love really can conquer all.

Jenn and David had the perfect love story. They were teenage sweethearts who married, and had two wonderful children. Everything was going to plan and they were looking forward to growing old together. Until Jenn is killed in a tragic accident, leaving David distraught and struggling to cope without the love of his life.

But for Jenn, death is not quite what she expected. Instead of resting in peace, she is trapped in a ghostly, grey world, struggling to reach the people she loves the most. To reach beyond the grey to help her family find happiness again, even if it means forgetting her to move on.

The back of the book says:

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ella’s been obsessed with books since she was a toddler. She decided to become a writer as soon as she realised that stringing letters together in the right order could actually be a career.

She grew up in the outskirts of London, where fairies lived at the bottom of her Grandma’s garden, so it isn’t surprising that she still looks for magic in everyday life – and often finds it.

When she’s not living in a fantasy world of her own creation, she writes bids and develops programmes for children’s services. She lives in rural Warwickshire (where there are probably more fairies) with her husband who is ever loving and understanding, and makes her gallons of tea in magical cups that can keep drinks warm for whole chapters.

Throughout lockdown, Ella’s spent a lot of time cleaning (who hasn’t), crocheting rainbows, and writing. She’s got two new novels in progress – but did take a few breaks to write stories (featuring a lot more dinosaur poop and talking animals than her usual style) for some very special youngsters spending birthdays in shielded lockdown.
