MY REVIEW

A wonderful and fitting ending to an extraordinary Trilogy – if you haven’t read this series yet and you love tales of fantasy, magic and folklore, then I highly recommend these books by Katherine Arden as I’ve been captivated from start to finish, and am eager to go back and read them all again very soon!!

In this final part Vasya is back and is cast as the bad guy and is hellbent on righting those wrongs and save those she loves. There is heartbreak, humour and heroic actions throughout as she travels through different worlds, meeting the weird, the wonderful and the dangerous along the way. I laughed, I cried ( a lot!) and it was just one of those stories that took you to places you least expected, let alone you could ever imagine and Vasya seems to be one of those characters who has her flaws but still manages to get you onside. Pity anyone who crosses her!!

This part of the trilogy is definitely the darkest and the most complex of all 3 books, but such an absorbing read and I’m really going to miss the characters and world that was created – thank you Katherine Arden!!

MY REVIEW

Reading this was a pleasant surprise and turned out to be nothing like I thought it was going to be!  It’s a blend of a courtroom drama, with an insightful and poignant story of finding your way in life and doing what makes you happy – it isn’t always about the money!

Add to the mix a man who says he’s Merlin – yes, THE Merlin! – and you find yourself totally involved with the fight for justice and watching how people can be transformed by those they meet along the way.

George Winsome – what a name for a lawyer! – is a barrister in training and finds himself thrown in the deep end for his first case! He has to learn the tricks of the trade as he goes and the pressure is on for him to win the case as there are expectations from his firm.  His client, Merlin, is accused of manslaughter but is seemingly winning over the hearts and minds of those he meets in jail – prisoners and staff! –  and the case soon  grabs the attention of the media! The case itself turns even crazier too especially when the Jury seem more interested in what food is on offer, and the Judge is dealing with a son who seeks revenge in a rather peculiar  way!

I really enjoyed the character of Merlin as he was just so pleasant and wise!  He’s often puzzled by the world he finds himself in and it was good to see modern life through his eyes.   He forms a great bond with George and that really helps in the second part of the book where he is there seemingly to guide George and his girlfriend Heather as they face some tougher times in their lives and they try to work out the point of it all!

So if you’re looking for a book that has a bit of fantasy, touches of humour and a strong courtroom drama element, then this is the book for you!  A really enjoyable read!!

#BlogTour The Spectacular Vision of Oskar Dunkelblick #BookReview #YA

My thanks to Anna and the team at RedDoor for inviting me to take part in this tour and to share my thoughts on the enigma that is Oskar Dunkelblick!!

About the book

‘A delightfully twisted tale, full of sharp humour and keen observations. Oskar makes for a very memorable modern-day anti-hero’ Mirror

‘A dark, beautifully crafted and, at times hilarious, story about a young man’s spiritual transformation. Highly recommended for young adults and grown-ups alike’ Fiona Parker, former panellist on the WHSmith Childrens’ Book Awards

Lemony Snicket meets His Dark Materials in this unforgettable YA crossover novel

Oskar is the ultimate teenage loner. He’s been living on the streets since he was a kid, he hates being touched and his eyes are always itchy from chronic conjunctivitis. To perk himself up, he paints the misery of mankind. After all, there’s so much of that about . . .

One day during a not-so-routine eye test, Oskar’s bleak perspective is blown apart when he tries on a pair of very unusual lenses. The world he glimpses is filled with love, light and wonder – and he is furious. But those lenses have opened his inner eye and much against his darker nature, Oskar’s perception and behaviour begin to change in ways that he could never, ever have imagined.

MY REVIEW

I do love a quirky character in the books I read, and you’ll have to go a long way to find one as quirky as Oskar!  He’s described as a teenage misery merchant! He seems to revel in the misfortune of others, and uses that for inspiration for his artwork!  So you’ll find yourself having very little sympathy for him as he makes his way to the village of KeineFreude, a grim little village full of people who seem to hate themselves and each other! But to Oskar this sounds like heaven! A perfect hotbed of bitter and twisted humans for him to exploit.  His motto ‘Compassion is for losers’ has stuck with him for many years

As you read more about Oskar and how he has treated  various people over the years, you do wonder why he has so much hate in his heart, but little glimpses into childhood reveal a lot and put things a little into perspective.  Some things he does though are very difficult to forgive!

As he settles into life in the new village he finds his outlook on life begins to shift after a visit to a strange little optician shop, and soon finds he’s beginning to hate who he is becoming! He’s seeing good in the world for the first time and finds himself doing nice things for others – totally against everything he has ever known!! But what is it about those glasses that have changed him?! And just why are so many villagers so  miserable?!  Maybe there’s more to meets the eye behind some of the villagers and maybe Oskar can finally play the hero instead of the villain!

I found this to be such a fun and dark read!  There were a number of quirky characters and the message behind the story was quite perceptive and relevant to the times we live in now.  I had so many mixed emotions about Oskar and his behaviour but found myself warming to him – and his Nesquik addiction! – as the story unfolded.  This is aimed at the YA market but can also be enjoyed by readers of all ages as it does teach you about how having a different outlook can change you as a person.

EARLY RISER by JASPER FFORDE

Very excited to receive this as I had seen it around publication date and thought it looked like ‘my kind of book’ but never got around to buying it!

The new standalone novel from Number 1 bestselling author Jasper Fforde.

Every Winter, the human population hibernates.

During those bitterly cold four months, the nation is a snow-draped landscape of desolate loneliness, and devoid of human activity.

Well, not quite.

Your name is Charlie Worthing and it’s your first season with the Winter Consuls, the committed but mildly unhinged group of misfits who are responsible for ensuring the hibernatory safe passage of the sleeping masses.

You are investigating an outbreak of viral dreams which you dismiss as nonsense; nothing more than a quirky artefact borne of the sleeping mind.

When the dreams start to kill people, it’s unsettling.

When you get the dreams too, it’s weird.

When they start to come true, you begin to doubt your sanity.

But teasing truth from Winter is never easy: You have to avoid the Villains and their penchant for murder, kidnapping and stamp collecting, ensure you aren’t eaten by Nightwalkers whose thirst for human flesh can only be satisfied by comfort food, and sidestep the increasingly less-than-mythical WinterVolk.

But so long as you remember to wrap up warmly, you’ll be fine.

BLOODY ROSE by NICHOLAS EAMES

Live fast, die young.

Tam Hashford is tired of working at her local pub, slinging drinks for world-famous mercenaries and listening to the bards sing of adventure and glory in the world beyond her sleepy hometown.

When the biggest mercenary band of all rolls into town, led by the infamous Bloody Rose, Tam jumps at the chance to sign on as their bard. It’s adventure she wants – and adventure she gets as the crew embark on a quest that will end in one of two ways: glory or death.

A real pleasure for me to be able to share my love for this book on the latest stop of the fabulous Blog Tour – my thanks to the author, publisher and Anne of Random Things Tours for letting me be part of it all!

About the book

The magical adventure begun in The Bear and the Nightingalecontinues as brave Vasya, now a young woman, is forced to choose between marriage or life in a convent and instead flees her home—but soon finds herself called upon to help defend the city of Moscow when it comes under siege.

Orphaned and cast out as a witch by her village, Vasya’s options are few: resign herself to life in a convent, or allow her older sister to make her a match with a Moscovite prince. Both doom her to life in a tower, cut off from the vast world she longs to explore. So instead she chooses adventure, disguising herself as a boy and riding her horse into the woods. When a battle with some bandits who have been terrorizing the countryside earns her the admiration of the Grand Prince of Moscow, she must carefully guard the secret of her gender to remain in his good graces—even as she realizes his kingdom is under threat from mysterious forces only she will be able to stop.

MY REVIEW

Where to begin with my love for this Winternight series?! I adored The Bear and the Nightingale so have been itching to pick up this book and follow the further adventures of Vasya and this is just a perfectly magical tale, full of bravery, heart, folklore and emotion.

After The Bear and the Nightingale, Vasya is seeking revenge, answers and a new life. All that is expected of a young girl of the time is marriage, but that isn’t on her mind so as she is exiled from her village she sets off dressed as a boy as safety to right the wrongs of the magical world she is part of. Along the way she finds villages burned down where bandits have come along and stolen the young girls of the village and killed everyone else, and she is determined to seek those causing such devastation.

She is introduced to the Grand Prince of Moscow on her travels and he is in awe of this ‘young man’ but she is recognised by her brother Sasha who left the village years ago to become a monk. He feels annoyed at his sisters’ behaviour and is torn by his family loyalty and fears the consequences if she is found out.

As with book one, the setting is just truly magical. There is beauty in the forests but it’s also a very brutal place and that double edge sword is explored throughout this book. Vasya as a character is much more mature in this book but she doesn’t lose that spark that made her so special when we first go to meet her. Being reunited with family members also brings out another side to her and is touching to see.

I loved spending more time with Vasya – a feisty heroine ahead of her time who is never afraid of daring to achieve the impossible, no matter the obstacles put in her way. Highly recommended!

The War in the Dark by Nick Setchfield

Debut novel of the SFX magazine editor.

A genre-defying page turner that fuses thriller and speculative fiction with dark fantasy in a hidden world in the heart of Cold War Europe.

Europe. 1963. And the true Cold War is fought on the borders of this world, at the edges of the light.

When the assassination of a traitor trading with the enemy goes terribly wrong, British Intelligence agent Christopher Winter must flee London. In a tense alliance with a lethal, mysterious woman named Karina Lazarova, he’s caught in a quest for hidden knowledge from centuries before, an occult secret written in a language of fire. A secret that will give supremacy to the nation that possesses it.

Racing against the Russians, the chase takes them from the demon-haunted Hungarian border to treasure-laden tunnels beneath Berlin, from an impossible house in Vienna to a bomb-blasted ruin in Bavaria where something unholy waits, born of the power of white fire and black glass . . .

Neither the Polity or the prador want the other in full control of the disc, so they’ve placed an impartial third party in charge of the weapons platform guarding the technology from escaping into the galaxy: Orlandine, a part-human, part-AI haiman. She’s assisted by Dragon, a mysterious, spaceship-sized alien entity who has long been suspicious of Jain technology and who suspects the disc is a trap lying-in-wait.

Meanwhile, the android Angel is planning an attack on the Polity, and is searching for a terrible weapon to carry out his plans?a Jain super-soldier. But what exactly the super-soldier is, and what it could be used for if it fell into the wrong hands, will bring Angel and Orlandine’s missions to a head in a way that could forever change the balance of power in the Polity universe.

In The Soldier, British science fiction writer Neal Asher kicks off another Polity-based trilogy in signature fashion, concocting a mind-melting plot filled with far-future technology, lethal weaponry, and bizarre alien creations.

#BookReview The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson

About the book

All 12-year-old Marinka wants is a friend. A real friend. Not like her house with chicken legs. Sure, the house can play games like tag and hide-and-seek, but Marinka longs for a human companion. Someone she can talk to and share secrets with.
But that’s tough when your grandmother is a Yaga, a guardian who guides the dead into the afterlife. It’s even harder when you live in a house that wanders all over the world . . . carrying you with it. Even worse, Marinka is being trained to be a Yaga. That means no school, no parties–and no playmates that stick around for more than a day.
So when Marinka stumbles across the chance to make a real friend, she breaks all the rules . . . with devastating consequences. Her beloved grandmother mysteriously disappears, and it’s up to Marinka to find her–even if it means making a dangerous journey to the afterlife.
With a mix of whimsy, humor, and adventure, this debut novel will wrap itself around your heart and never let go.

MY REVIEW

What an utterly gorgeous book – inside and out!  The perfect book for readers of all ages!! I devoured this magical story of Marinka and her quest to be normal – very difficult in the world she lives in!

This is a re-telling of the Baba Yaga folk tale with its’ own unique twists, and it’s a book I could imagine making the perfect Studio Ghibli film as the premise of a house that can move around at will and has feelings , whilst the Baba Yaga is there to help those who have passed on make it safely through the gates.

But Marinka wants more from her life – she wants friends to hang out but that isn’t her destiny, so when she takes things into her own hands to suit her own needs it leads to some devastating consequences.

I loved the setting, the beautifully illustrated pages and wonderful way that this story was told. It is full of so much magic and fantasy and explores tenderly the importance of honesty, friendship and the subject of death. Absolute gem of a book and I look forward to more from this author in the future as she has a wonderful gift for storytelling!

#BookReview The Parentations by Kate Mayfield

About the book

Eighteenth-century London and the lives of the sisters Fitzgerald, Constance and Verity, become entwined with the nearby Fowler household. For Clovis Fowler, whose unearthly Nordic beauty belies a ruthless thirst for power, and husband Finn, a Limehouse thief, have agreed to provide safe harbour to a mysterious baby.
The puzzling phenomenon binding them close arose unexpectedly from deep within the savage but beautiful landscape of Iceland, where a hidden pool of water grants those who drink from it endless life. But those who sip from the waterfall discover all too quickly that immortality is no gift.
To preserve the life of this strange baby from those who wish him harm means that all concerned must remain undiscovered for more than two hundred years. And, as the centuries creep thither, one in their enclave proves more menacing than those who pursue them. Worse, the life-giving pool that sustains them all, runs dry…

MY REVIEW

I received this book in the recent My Chronicle Book Box Fantasy Edition – click here for my unboxing post.  I’d not heard about it before and so this past weekend was another Big Book Weekender, and this was the big book I picked it up to read and it made the bank holiday weekend fly by!!

Who wants to live forever? If you answered yes, then you may want to change your mind after reading this highly original historical novel that follows a number of characters, over a wide span of years, set in London and Iceland and their experiences with the impact that immortality brings their way.

I did find this book started quite slowly, so don’t let that put you off, as you soon become captivated by the characters, none more so than by Constance and Verity, who are sisters, and the mystery baby who comes into their lives with very little known of why he has arrived and for how long they will have him under their roof.

The story starts in Iceland in 1783 with the eruption of a volcano, which opens up a green pool from which Stefan drinks from before knowing the consequences of his action. He is then the keeper of this knowledge to help those who also drink from it understand what lies ahead for them.

I loved the originality of this story, alongside the development of the characters over the centuries and all they encounter. There is always a slightly unsettling undertone to the whole story and you can understand the pressure that those affected by immortality end up facing.

It’s a beautifully written book, so inventive and a fascinating study of family dynamics that never fails to satisfy your curiosity and one I highly recommend!

#BookReview Tomorrow by Damia Dibben

ABOUT THE BOOK

A wise old dog travels through the courts and battlefields of Europe and through the centuries in search of the master who granted him immortality

“Ornate, vivid, deeply colored, and so precise I could smell and taste the world… The story of a dog crossing continents and centuries in search of the man he loves is moving and tender. I was captivated by its charm from the beginning.” —Rachel Joyce, author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Tomorrow tells the story of a 217-year-old dog and his search for his lost master. His adventures take him through the London Frost Fair, the strange court of King Charles I, the wars of the Spanish succession, Versailles, the golden age of Amsterdam and to nineteenth-century Venice. As he journeys through Europe, he befriends both animals and humans, falls in love (only once), marvels at the human ability to make music, despairs at their capacity for war and gains insight into both the strength and frailties of the human spirit.

With the rich historical vision of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrelland the captivating canine perspective of A Dog’s Purpose, Tomorrow draws us into a unique century-spanning tale of the unbreakable connection between dog and human.

MY REVIEW

Tomorrow is a dog! And he’s your narrator throughout this truly unique and imaginative historical book. And he also happens to be 217 years old! So there’s a lot of stories to tell as he takes you through his life and his quest to track down his beloved master once more, after he goes missing when they’re at a cathedral.

I loved the idea of this book and found it to be a very intriguing read, even if sometimes it did fall a little flat for me. There’s a lot of jumping around time wise and that is dealt with quite well, but I often found some of the timelines a little pointless and distracting from that bond between dog and master.

It was fascinating to view history in this way, through the eyes of Tomorrow – lots of time spent in Venice, The English Civil War, Waterloo to name a few – and this was often graphic and quite horrifying as he tried to make sense of what he saw humans doing to each other. He’s a very perceptive character and you can’t help but feel touched by the lengths he goes to in trying to reconnect with his master, and the fact that he helps other dogs along the way and becomes quite close to some!

If you are looking for a book that offers something a little different then I highly recommend this as it is a story that is truly original! The striking cover is also worth checking out!!
