MY REVIEW

I’m finding it rather refreshing to  pick up more books nowadays that feature characters who aren’t just fresh out of school, or dealing with life in their 20’s and in Flora Air we meet a woman who is dreaming of being a writer but working in a mundane day job.  She’s also starting to show symptoms of menopause and all that entails – the lack of sleep, the self doubt – and this story follows her as she tries to write the story she knows she’s got in her and how a chance meeting starts to see her life turn in a new direction.

Professor Jolly is a teacher of creative writing and coming to terms with his wife being poorly in hospital. He seems genuinely interested in Flora and her writing and it’s touching to see their friendship blossom – they’re both lonely souls and it seems fitting that they find one another in this way.   Having another person give her feedback on her writing seems to spur her on and her outlook becomes more positive and she finally starts to believe in herself and what she could achieve.

This was a really easy to read story that just came to life for me when the magical elements were introduced!  I’ve found myself wanting my books on my shelves to come to life in the same way that they do in this book – I’m still waiting but hoping!! Maybe they wait until I’m fast asleep……

I really enjoyed spending time with Flora and how having someone believe in her helped push her on to achieve her dream and help her overcome the other issues in her life.  Well worth a look if you’re after a book with a lovely magical feel!

MY REVIEW

Swoon! A book that has every base covered – gorgeous setting, go-getting characters, history, mystery, romance and thriller vibes! What more could you want from a book?! I loved every page!!

Aurora is committed to her work and she is a much respected art historian, which means she travels all over delving into the past. She finds herself in Paris at the request of a top auction house and she wants to prove that she is worthy of the work they are trusting her with. Romance is the last thing on her mind!

She soon comes across the path of Cedric who is a journalist used to getting his own way and never taking no as an answer. When he sniffs out a story it is just coincidence that Aurora may be getting in his way! He wants to do a story on the work she does – she disagree but soon finds that having Cedric around might help her out when things start to take a sinister turn as she finds out more about the manuscript at the centre of her work.

I really love Aurora as a character – so devoted to her work and  not easily distracted but you do notice chinks in her armour when things begin to turn a little darker and the truth about her past comes to light and you totally understand what is pushing her to do well in her work.

And she is reluctant to take a chance on people considering she has been lied to and had her trust in others shattered so when Cedric shows up, you understand her reluctance to let him into her life – even if he does seem to appear when she needs him the most.

Aurora and Cedric are such wonderful main characters to follow – devoted to their jobs but also quite playful with their banter and I loved being in their company! There are twists and turns galore and the pace really builds up nicely towards the end as things came to a head!  A wonderfully modern fairy tale!!

#BlogTour #BookReview A Right Royal Face-Off by Simon Edge #Giveaway @rararesources @EyeAndLightning

A huge delight to be the latest stop on the Blog Tour for A RIGHT ROYAL FACE-OFF by SIMON EDGE.  My thanks to the author, publisher and Rachel of Rachel’s Random Resources for the copy of the book and putting this tour together – and letting me be part of it all!

There’s also a chance for you to win a copy of this book too!! I do spoil you……..

A Right Royal Face-Off

It is 1777, and England’s second-greatest portrait artist, Thomas Gainsborough, has a thriving practice a stone’s thrown from London’s royal palaces, while the press talks up his rivalry with Sir Joshua Reynolds, the pedantic theoretician who is the top dog of British portraiture.

Fonder of the low life than high society, Gainsborough loathes pandering to grand sitters, but he changes his tune when he is commissioned to paint King George III and his large family. In their final, most bitter competition, who will be chosen as court painter, Tom or Sir Joshua?

Meanwhile, two and a half centuries later, a badly damaged painting turns up on a downmarket antiques TV show being filmed in Suffolk. Could the monstrosity really be, as its eccentric owner claims, a Gainsborough? If so, who is the sitter? And why does he have donkey’s ears?

Mixing ancient and modern as he did in his acclaimed debut The Hopkins Conundrum, Simon Edge takes aim at fakery and pretension in this highly original celebration of one of our greatest artists.

MY REVIEW

If you are looking for a book that is the perfect antidote to the miserable, crazy world we currently live in, then you’ve come to the right place!!  This is a Georgian comedy about Thomas Gainsborough  and his rival painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds – if you thought the art world was stuffy and dull then think again!  It’s a book that made me smile and chuckle on numerous occasions and I just adored spending time with these characters and wondering where the story would take me!

It’s a dual timeline story – from the present time when a new antiques show is about to debut on TV and they’re looking to spice things up, to the past where we see Thomas dealing with royalty and rivalry on a grand scale!  There’s also letters we get to read from the past as we read the Georgian goings on from the point of view of David, a servant to the master painter and he has a whole different take on events at work, as he reports back to his family and let them know about a world they can’t even  begin to imagine!

Gainsborough is a  wonderful character! He almost seems to resent having to paint portraits but it pays the bills and he wants to be #1 – not easy when Sir Joshua seems to be flavour of the month! I loved the behind the scenes  goings on too at a sitting for a painting – the royal family gossiping and complaining about life as they chat with him!

In the present we get to witness how the world of TV operates, especially reality shows who try and use the public and humiliate them – when Muriel Mudge takes a painting along to be valued they think they’ve struck gold with her absurd claim but they’re soon the ones eating humble pie when she digs in her heels and refuses to speak to them as they try and make amends when doubts start to creep in!

The whole flow of this book was just pitched perfectly! There’s a great balance between the two timelines and so much to keep you entertained and intrigued! Just why is there a painting of a man with donkey ears?!  You can tell that the author has had so much fun with creating this storyline as it really comes across and his imagination has run riot!

A blast to read and quite touching too at times! It’s a book that has a little bit of everything from history, to mystery to satire and it  is one I highly recommend to everyone!

MY REVIEW

Rosa and her trusty canine companion, Hot, are back! And it was lovely to connect with them again along with the other inhabitants of Cockleberry Bay in this fabulous sequel.

And life should be smelling of roses as she celebrates life being married to the lovely Josh. But the reality of him working away a lot is hitting home and Rosa is finding things tough, and I really enjoyed how this author doesn’t sugar coat life! She writes it warts and all – the good, the bad and the ugly!! It makes it so much easier to connect with characters who aren’t perfect! They mess up, they make mistakes and it’s how they deal with life after those bumps in the road that really make for an enjoyable read.

This book has that wonderful sense of humour that was so prevalant in the first book which makes you laugh out loud in certain cirumstances, but with this story the author manages to touch on slightly darker subjects that can affect us all which gives it a more realistic and grown up feel. With Rosa struggling it gives us the opportunity to see a character dealing with anxiety, addiction issues and jealousy, and how she deals with that and why, as humans, we all do silly things when we’re not thinking straight and our minds run away with themselves!

The community of Cockleberry Bay have their own issues that we’re introduced to and I loved the range of characters again – Jacob and Raff who run the local gastro pub face an uncertain future because of another pub having a refurb, and Titch dealing with being a new mum and dealing with the problems that causes, then there’s something for everyone going on! There never seems to be a dull moment in Cockleberry Bay, that’s for sure!!

A really enjoyable and entertaining read!

MY REVIEW

This is the 3rd book from Susanna Bavin, and my 1st read of one of hers and I’m now excited to go back and read her other titles as I found this to be captivating, heartbreaking  and such a wonderful read following the story of Juliet – and my heart broke for her many times throughout!!  She is one of those characters who has a heart of gold but life seems to have such a downer on her – but she’s full of determination and such a hard worker that you find yourself cheering on every success and happy moment she gets to encounter.

Juliet has a tough life ahead of her, especially after losing her father so she and her mother have to move and fend for themselves.  Agnes finds work as a seamstress for a titled family and Juliet begins to work too, but life doesn’t seem to be getting any easier for them, Juliet especially and she soon finds herself alone, picked on by other girls in the sewing room and working for the most loathsome character.  But she does find an ally in Hal, who is working in the garden and builds up quite the friendship to the displeasure of others, who want to put as much distance as they can between the two.

Whatever Juliet faces, she never crumbles!  And for that she is a total heroine!  She has so much responsibility on her shoulders from the start and  a heart of gold but people who come into her life seem to just treat her like dirt and take advantage of her.  Even members of her own family aren’t the most pleasant characters in the way they treat her, but she finds solace in her work and is remarkably tough and I think the creative side of dress making gives her an escape from the misery she has endured.

Set in the 1890’s, I found this to be such a gratifying read and a main character who is difficult to be forgotten! She endures such horrific actions throughout, but her spirit is never broken and that is something to be admired!

MY REVIEW

When your parents hire a bodyguard to protect you, then you know things are getting serious! And that is the situation Kelly finds herself in as she works on a very important vaccine, and what follows is a thrilling and fast paced story that I thoroughly enjoyed!

Kelly is very focused on her work, and coming from a family of scientists, her parents are well aware of the importance of her projects.  So when she gets the feeling that she is being watched and followed, her parents don’t want to take any chances and hire Ben to work as her bodyguard.  She is not ready for the constant surveillance so it takes some getting used to!

Ben takes his own work very seriously too and will leave nothing to chance while he’s working for her.  It helps that they click on a personal level too, and the more time they spend together, the more the bond grows between them!

And despite his protection there seems to be someone determined to get to Kelly, and the action really heats up and puts them both in danger and it got my blood pumping with the suspense!

It really mixes the romance aspect well with the action, and allows you to get to know both characters pretty well – they have both lived such different lives but have a respect for one another and the work that they both do, and that really helps you understand the issues they have initially working with one another, Kelly in particular! She doesn’t want to be the damsel in distress, but soon realises her work places her on the radar of people who will go to extreme measures to get her out of the way.

A fabulous read – Crikey it’s good!!
