MY REVIEW

This is the 3rd book from Susanna Bavin, and my 1st read of one of hers and I’m now excited to go back and read her other titles as I found this to be captivating, heartbreaking  and such a wonderful read following the story of Juliet – and my heart broke for her many times throughout!!  She is one of those characters who has a heart of gold but life seems to have such a downer on her – but she’s full of determination and such a hard worker that you find yourself cheering on every success and happy moment she gets to encounter.

Juliet has a tough life ahead of her, especially after losing her father so she and her mother have to move and fend for themselves.  Agnes finds work as a seamstress for a titled family and Juliet begins to work too, but life doesn’t seem to be getting any easier for them, Juliet especially and she soon finds herself alone, picked on by other girls in the sewing room and working for the most loathsome character.  But she does find an ally in Hal, who is working in the garden and builds up quite the friendship to the displeasure of others, who want to put as much distance as they can between the two.

Whatever Juliet faces, she never crumbles!  And for that she is a total heroine!  She has so much responsibility on her shoulders from the start and  a heart of gold but people who come into her life seem to just treat her like dirt and take advantage of her.  Even members of her own family aren’t the most pleasant characters in the way they treat her, but she finds solace in her work and is remarkably tough and I think the creative side of dress making gives her an escape from the misery she has endured.

Set in the 1890’s, I found this to be such a gratifying read and a main character who is difficult to be forgotten! She endures such horrific actions throughout, but her spirit is never broken and that is something to be admired!

MY REVIEW

When your parents hire a bodyguard to protect you, then you know things are getting serious! And that is the situation Kelly finds herself in as she works on a very important vaccine, and what follows is a thrilling and fast paced story that I thoroughly enjoyed!

Kelly is very focused on her work, and coming from a family of scientists, her parents are well aware of the importance of her projects.  So when she gets the feeling that she is being watched and followed, her parents don’t want to take any chances and hire Ben to work as her bodyguard.  She is not ready for the constant surveillance so it takes some getting used to!

Ben takes his own work very seriously too and will leave nothing to chance while he’s working for her.  It helps that they click on a personal level too, and the more time they spend together, the more the bond grows between them!

And despite his protection there seems to be someone determined to get to Kelly, and the action really heats up and puts them both in danger and it got my blood pumping with the suspense!

It really mixes the romance aspect well with the action, and allows you to get to know both characters pretty well – they have both lived such different lives but have a respect for one another and the work that they both do, and that really helps you understand the issues they have initially working with one another, Kelly in particular! She doesn’t want to be the damsel in distress, but soon realises her work places her on the radar of people who will go to extreme measures to get her out of the way.

A fabulous read – Crikey it’s good!!

MY REVIEW

Could you go social media free for a month?! Not sure I could but this book gives you a glimpse of what life was like before Twitter, Instagram and Facebook as Melissa is challenged by her editor to go ‘gadget free’ for a month and see how she gets on in the world and write up her experiences! And it’s a real eye opener!  Just how do you contact people with no phone or email?!  And can you look for love in the real world when all the dating seems to be done online now with various apps?!

Melissa is one of those characters that we can all relate to – comparing her life to those she sees online and just wanting to find someone special to spend time with….she’s even got her parents offering to set her up on dates with the son of a neighbour! So when she is set this challenge she sees it as a good excuse to focus on what is important to her and start seizing opportunities and mixing with ‘real’ people out in the ‘real’ world! And she soon finds that living a little can be a lot more fun than living digitally!

There’s lots of laughs in this book and just shows the perils of dating in your ’30’s – the good and the bad experiences, and how society expects you to follow what everyone else is doing! And that is reinforced by the world of social media with everyone showing off about their lives, but unable to really connect with people and seeing Melissa struggle to function in the world we live in now was a real eye opener. Just how did we pass the time before the internet was there to swallow up huge chunks of time with all the apps, games and YouTube videos!  It definitely made me look at how I use social media and will do my best to limit my time!

Her time offline really helps her to meet a variety of new blokes and this leads to some fun times and just made her seem a much happier version of herself when she wasn’t comparing herself to what everyone else was doing.

A really fun and entertaining read!

MY REVIEW

What a way to start a series! This is an exciting introduction to a world of time travel and follows the journey of a young girl – Engella – as she seeks to find the truth about herself while trying to escape from The Hunters who are dogged in their pursuit of her.  No matter where she goes they follow, so she has to be very wary of meeting new people wherever she goes.

This is a story full of action and adventure and I loved the different settings used – from the rugged Scottish coasts, to the deserts of New Mexico and city streets of a future New Shanghai, Engella is caught up in a complex world where she’s desperate to find out the truth of her family and more of The Corporation who are determined to track her down because they think she knows more than she’s letting on!

The Corporation are a nasty bunch to get mixed up with, and that leads to some dark encounters throughout and they will stop at nothing to get what they want.

I loved the flow of this book! The change of timelines and scenery work so well to keep the pace going, and there’s always a new element being introduced just to add to the tension and adventure! Engella is a really smart character and so inquisitive and  brave, and the connection she had with various characters she met along the way was very touching.  So glad to see that this is the first in a series as I can’t wait to find out what is in store next for Engella!! A great read for YA and adult readers!

#BlogTour A Lion is Not Just for Christmas by Henriette Gyland #bookextract #giveaway @rararesources

Delighted to be able to share an extract AND a giveaway with you today as part of this fabulous Blog Tour. My thanks to the author, publisher and Rachel of Rachel’s Random Resources for letting me be part of it all!

About the book

Is there life after the circus has left town?

Circus performer Justine Belmont works with big cats, but when the circus is disbanded and the old lion is sold to a private menagerie at a stately home in Norfolk, she is asked to spend a few weeks settling him into his new environment. When she arrives at the estate, however, she receives a mixed welcome.

The groundsman Tom Yates resents her presence as he doesn’t feel he needs her help with the lion. He revises his opinion when he sees the bond between her and the big cat, and she and Tom grow closer, although Justine remains torn about her feelings for him. The lady of the house, Priscilla – who is married to the reclusive owner, Lord Brooks’s, grandson – is not so easily convinced. She perceives Justine as a threat for the male attention and her plans for the manor. And her two young daughters are a little too curious about the lion for their own good.

When unsettling events occur, Justine begins to wonder if there is more to Priscilla’s animosity than meets the eye. Can Justine keep herself and everyone else safe until it’s time for her to leave again and start a new life elsewhere?

EXTRACT

The following scene is during the last circus performance of the season. In the ring Justine is assisting her father, Elijah, in his lion-taming act.

Then, one by one, the animals were let into the ring through a tunnel cage.

‘Behold the terrifying Rexus, straight from the African sa-a-avannah!’ intoned the MC as the lion lumbered in and found his assigned pedestal to the far left, his home-away-from-home when out of his cage.

‘Regard the fearsome tiger duo, Ajit and Mohan, the man-eaters of Ca-a-alcutta!’

Never mind that Rexus was bred in captivity and the young tiger twins came from a circus in Australia … The illusion was everything.

Ajit found his pedestal with no trouble, but Mohan snarled and clawed at Elijah’s cane, his only defence against three large predators. There was a collective gasp from the audience, and a little girl at the front, who was here with her parents and grandfather by the looks of it, climbed onto her father’s lap and promptly stuck her thumb in her mouth. The deep auburn hair of the little girl’s father shone in the circus spotlight and caught Justine’s attention. When her eyes met his – such dark, stormy blue eyes – through the bars of the cage, she nearly missed her footing and had to force her focus back on the animals.

Never turn your back on the tigers.

Elijah’s first warning to Justine when she began assisting him rang out in her head. Male lions like Rexus were easier to tame because of their usually laidback nature, but tigers were more reserved and unpredictable.

She swallowed hard as her father coaxed Mohan on to his pedestal, using soothing words, a titbit of meat, and the command ‘Platz!’ After what seemed like an age Mohan complied and sat on his pedestal with a smug grin on his face.

The audience cheered with relief, not knowing that it had been one such unruly tiger which had made Justine’s mother Beth retire from the ring and take over catering instead. With a jagged scar on her arm to prove it.

When all three cats had settled, Elijah raised his cane and said, ‘Up!’ Rexus and the tigers sat up on their hind legs with their front paws in a begging pose and stayed on their hind legs for as long as Elijah held the cane in the air. When he lowered it again, the animals sat down.

A member of the ring passed three silver balls down the tunnel cage and Justine placed each of them in front of the animals.

‘Seat!’ Elijah raised and lowered his cane to command the tigers to climb onto the ball, and at the word ‘Up!’ they raised themselves onto their hind legs, balancing on the balls. He then commanded Rexus onto his ball. The old lion did so but with a little less confidence, then when Elijah circled his finger in the air, the lion rolled the ball in a straight line to the edge of the cage grunting discontentedly, where he stopped, faltered a little when turning around, then back to his pedestal. ‘Platz!’ got him seated again.

The Irish audience responded with a roar of applause. They were every bit as appreciative as English audiences had been, more so perhaps. It made Justine’s longing for her native country bearable as she still missed touring in England.

But this Christmas could be different, because this time she might not be spending it alone. Can Owen Cooper charm Gabby into loving Christmas in the same way he’s charmed his way into her life, or is he just another person who’ll end up disappointing her?

MY REVIEW

Another sweet treat of a read from the wonderful Kathryn Freeman.

The story starts in the build up to Christmas and life at work has just picked up for Owen as he spots Gabby and he’s smitten! Is it wise to start a work relationship though? Gabby is just as smitten with the seemingly confident salesman, but she senses he’s a flirty character and that is just the way he acts with everyone, so maybe she’s reading too much into his glances and attention!

But as they begin to spend more time together, they both allow themselves to open up to one another and as their pasts have scarred them, it is no wonder that they both seem a little reluctant to jump right into a relationship. But they are both such endearing characters that you quickly warm to their ways and wish they’d both be brave and embrace their time together.

With Christmas fast approaching there’s always going to be some extra drama to muddy the water and it’s how they both deal with the problems facing them that tug at your heartstrings and make this such a satisfying story. I just wish it could have gone on for longer as I loved spending time in their company! Fabulous festive fun!!
