#GuestPost CHRISTMAS AT SERENITY BAY by HELEN BRIDGETT #PublicationDay @ChocLituk @Helen_Bridgett

Hello!!  Time for another fabulous guest post from the lovely Helen Bridgett today to help celebrate the publication day for CHRISTMAS AT SERENITY BAY!!  Go grab your copy right NOW!!!

Over to you Helen….

🎄🎄🎄

Hi there and thanks for inviting me back to talk about Christmas at Serenity Bay.

What’s the story about? Well, it’s a good old romantic comedy to warm the cockles at Christmas!

In Summer at Serenity Bay, we met our cast of characters for the first time. Chloe, a location scout, had just moved up to the village to help her best friend Rowan develop a wellness retreat. Before long Chloe fell in love with both the village and Andy, the local kayak instructor. So she stayed and is now building a career turning Serenity Bay into a prime location for TV and film shoots.

In this book, Serenity is playing host to the cast and crew of a cozy crime series – The Montgomery Mysteries. It’s a show very much like Midsommer Murders where improbable things happen in a very small place and I have to confess that I had such a laugh writing this novel. There’s a crime solving Labrador for a start! And for Maggie – Serenity’s pub landlady – it’s all so exciting. This is her favourite show on TV so she’s determined to feature somehow. She gets the chance when things start to go wrong on set and Maggie turns amateur sleuth to get to the bottom of it.

As well as dealing with all this in the run up to Christmas, Chloe has another problem – one all women will recognise. She simply cannot think of anything to get her man for Christmas. I’ve certainly been there and the issue is made even worse for Chloe because Andy keeps telling her he’s found something perfect. That’s real pressure for you!

Of course it’s all set on the beautiful Northumberland coastline again and this really is very special at Christmas. The sky is a different, moody shade of blue and the sunrises are simply spectacular. The beaches are quiet and simply wonderful to walk before getting home to a cosy sofa and a mug of hot chocolate. We even take a visit to Holy Island in this novel and if you have never been before, then I would heartily recommend it – just remember to check the tide times.

Christmas at Serenity Bay gives you two gentle mysteries to solve, a good laugh and a sprinkling of romance. I think it has that feel-good factor we’re all looking for at the end of the year and I do hope you enjoy it.

Merry Christmas everyone !

🎄🎄🎄

About the Book:

A peaceful Christmas in Serenity Bay? Think again!

Chloe Walsh’s skills as location manager for the beautiful seaside village she calls home have come up trumps again, and Serenity Bay is now the setting for cosy crime drama The Montgomery Mysteries, starring amateur sleuth Dominic Montgomery and his crime-solving dog, Agatha.

But Chloe is in a race against time. Filming has to finish before the village Midwinter Festival but schedules are tight – and a mystery saboteur is intent on slowing things down even further. Not only is Chloe facing problems with the shoot, she also has some personal conundrums to solve – a diva actor has commandeered her flat, her mum is having a late mid-life crisis, plus she has no idea what to buy for her Christmas-obsessed boyfriend!

Can Chloe sort out her life and save Christmas for an entire village?

Book 2 – Serenity Bay. Book 1 – Christmas at Serenity Bay.

#GuestPost WRONG SORT OF GIRL by HELEN BRIDGETT #PublicationDay @ChocLituk

Hello and thanks for joining me at Books & Me today! And I’m very happy to be handing over the blog today  to the lovely Helen Bridgett to help celebrate publication day for WRONG SORT OF GIRL!!!  Go get your copy ASAP!!!

Over to you Helen….

Wrong Sort of Girl by Helen Bridgett

I read across many genres so it seemed fairly natural for me to write both rom-com and crime fiction. At the end of the day, both genres are often about a woman who finds herself in a difficult situation and has to work out how to deal with it. Whether you’re reading Serenity Bay or either of my Professor Maxie Reddick novels, I hope you can relate to the main protagonist and see yourself in some of their actions.

In my crime novels – One by One and Wrong Sort of Girl – the heroine isn’t a policewoman but she does work closely with them and knows their procedures. She’s a professor of Criminology and in each case used her knowledge of that subject to help identify the culprit. I have to confess that I have loved researching all of the topics that are covered in Criminology and there are days when I forget that I actually have to get on with writing the book itself!

In Wrong Sort of Girl, I cover a subject called unconscious bias – how we all make decisions about someone purely on their appearance and how this impacts the justice system. The missing girl in this novel – Kelly – loves to party. She’s wild, tattooed, pierced and simply wouldn’t look good on the front pages of the newspapers. But she’s also a loving, successful young woman and Professor Reddick is determined to remind the general public of this and equally determined to find her. It’s set in the week before Christmas and in researching the book, I was fascinated and horrified to find out how many people actually do go missing at this time of year.

Professor Reddick has a cast of characters helping her to find Kelly including Kelly’s gorgeous but fiery Spanish boyfriend. We also see the return of DS Andrew Dawson who tries to keep Professor Reddick out of trouble – good luck with that!

Wrong Sort of Girl will get you thinking and will keep you on your toes as, alongside the professor, you try to work out what has happened to Kelly.

📚📚📚

ABOUT THE BOOK

A young woman has gone missing. It’s nearly Christmas. Why does hardly anyone seem to care?

Kelly Ingles’ case should have been one to tug on the public’s heartstrings: a young woman missing in the run-up to Christmas.

But Kelly wasn’t perfect – she liked to party, enjoyed a drink, didn’t always make the best decisions. And when evidence of her drunken antics appears online, it becomes clear that Kelly might not just have been in the wrong place at the wrong time; she might also be the wrong sort of girl to encourage public sympathy.

It’s a case that’s right up Maxie Reddick’s street. As a criminology professor, she’s made it her mission to challenge unconscious biases within the criminal justice system – the sort of biases that cause girls like Kelly to slip through the cracks.

But can she get the police and public on board before it’s too late?

ABOUT THE BOOK

When practising what you preach is easier said than done …

Professor Maxie Reddick has her reasons for being sceptical of traditional policing methods, but, in between her criminology lecturing job and her Criminal Thoughts podcast, she stays firmly on the side lines of the crime solving world.

Then a young woman is brutally attacked, and suddenly it’s essential that Maxie turns her words into actions; this is no longer an academic exercise – this is somebody’s life.

But as she delves deeper, the case takes a sickening turn, which leads Maxie to the horrifying realisation that the attack might not have been a one-off. It seems there’s a depraved individual out there seeking revenge, and they’ll stop at nothing to get it … little by little … one by one.

MY REVIEW

This is a book that hits the ground running and then doesn’t let up with the tension and twists! And I loved it!  It’s one of those books that instantly grabs you and doesn’t let go!! And in Professor Maxie, the author has created a character who you want on your side as she’s tenacious in her pursuit of the perpetrator, no matter what it costs her personally.

When a young woman is brutally raped, Maxie is brought in by her friend who wants Georgina to report the attack to the police.  She’s obviously very traumatised by the attack and struggles to open up.  Maxie has a way with words to try and tease little snippets of information out of her and sets out to retrace her steps on the night of the wedding party when the attack took place.

Her role as a professor of criminology means she pays attention to the smallest of details and that proves her strength in her quest to find out just who would commit such an act.  And when the case takes an even darker turn, she is drawn in even more and might even be putting her own family at risk.

And we also get to see things from the viewpoint of the criminal himself which gave an incredible insight into his frame of mind and his attempts to justify his actions. Putting the blame on the victim and doing all he can to stay out of sight.

There is a great flow to this book. The action never lets up and alongside the investigation into the attack, we also see that things aren’t great for Maxie in her own personal  life and haven’t been for some time.  You often wonder if she’s spending so much time on the case in order to avoid things at home.

This was an intense and thrilling story and I can’t wait to read more from the author!

#GuestPost ONE BY ONE by HELEN BRIDGETT #PublicationDay @RubyFiction @Helen_Bridgett

Happy Publication Day to Helen Bridgett!  It’s release day for One By One and I’m very happy to be handing over my Blog today for Helen to give you a little more info about her book!!Over to you Helen…

📚📚📚

One by One is my debut crime thriller for Ruby Fiction. Previously I’ve written romantic comedies but across both genres you’ll find a strong female protagonist right at the centre, dealing with whatever life throws at them.

One by One features Professor Maxie Reddick – a lively, intelligent character who teaches Criminology at the local university and has her own crime podcast. She gets very frustrated by all the TV cop shows and detective novels because she knows that, in real life, many crimes are never solved. In an outburst on her podcast, she tells her listeners that because the conviction rates are so low, she could probably do better herself.

Listening to her is a young woman who desperately needs the Professor’s help. Now that her bluff has been called, Maxie has to put her money where her mouth is and begin an investigation.

Throughout the novel, I’m asking the reader to put themselves in Maxie’s position and ask themselves – what would I do? Maxie cannot relax knowing that someone might get away with a horrific crime but as events progress she realises there is a thin line between seeking justice and vengeful vigilantism.

I looked at several career options for Maxie in the course of developing the story, but when I started to research the study of Criminology I found it completely fascinating. Students ask questions like: Who gets to decide what is a criminal act? and What new actions should be a criminal act? The questions seem even more pertinent after a year in which visiting one’s friends and family has suddenly become more or less illegal. I have to confess that I’d love to be debating these questions in a lecture theatre, and in writing the novel I was able to indulge that fantasy.

I have another Professor Reddick novel in development so I hope that this one is well-received and that I keep readers guessing right until the end!

About the author

I live in the North East of England with my hubby and our chocolate Labrador Angus. Walking the dog frequently inspires scenes, short stories or plotlines as we’re out in all weathers in the glorious Northumberland countryside.

I guess I began writing with a diary as I’ve kept one for as long as I can remember and I’ve always loved the physical act of writing – putting pen to paper. I love exploring words and discovering new books – everything about the craft. Whenever I talk to other authors, I hear similar experiences – how they loved to write poetry at school but never kept it up, how they used to make up stories for their siblings – I was just the same. However, when I left University I went into marketing and although I really enjoyed it, the urge to write a book never went away. One year, I simply decided it was now or never!

I made a new year’s resolution to write a novel and give it as a Christmas present. My first novel, The Mercury Travel Club was born and the characters took on a life of their own resulting in the sequel -The Heat is On.

In 2020 I signed with Ruby Fiction and a new set of characters took up the main stage in Summer at Serenity Bay.

MY REVIEW

Sign me up for the Serenity Bay Wellness Retreat!! I adored my time with these characters and in such a wonderful setting – and hands off Andy the surfer! He’s mine!!

Chloe is the central character in this book and she’s looking for a new outlook on life.  She’s fled London after problems with her job and her ex, and she finds herself back with her bestie, Roisin, in Northumberland.  Far away from the hustle and bustle of city life that had been central to her working and personal life, so taking to a quieter way of life is a bit of a battle!

But she feels at home with Roisin and her nan and soon finds herself helping them out in setting up a Wellness retreat to try and revive the area they live in and earn some well needed money.  It gives Chloe that creative buzz again and she finds herself jumping right in with all aspects of it and even using her London contacts to find willing customers!

This was such a relaxing and inspiring read! The community, even despite a little resistance from some, were a great support throughout the process as they could see how it could improve their lives and incomes.  Things never run smoothly, even more so when a bunch of celebs show up to film a reality show! I would totally watch a series that featured wellness retreats like this!! Seeing how getting out in nature, being creative, living more simply can help your mind, body and soul is a lesson to us all!  But with celebrities comes ego’s and diva behaviour so things do take a dark turn with the police getting involved!

I loved the friendship between Chloe and Roisin and loved every single minute of my time in Serenity Bay! I hope we get to go back and visit again soon!!

#GuestPost SUMMER AT SERENITY BAY by HELEN BRIDGETT #PublicationDay @ChocLituk

Hello!! Huge pleasure for me today to be able to share this guest post from the lovely Helen Bridgett on Publication Day for SUMMER AT SERENITY BAY!!  A book I think we’re all going to want to escape into right now and who can resist that stunning Summery scene on the cover! I want to be there NOW!!

So over to you Helen…….

Summer at Serenity Bay by Helen Bridgett

I’m originally from the North-East of England but over the past few years have lived all over the country. Last year I moved back and was reminded just how beautiful the coastline is up here. Northumberland really does have some of the most spectacular beaches in the world and the sky is truly spectacular. So when starting my novel, Summer at Serenity Bay, I knew it had to be set here. I wanted to create a story about a wellness retreat and if anywhere can make you feel better – it’s the sea.

My two main characters – Chloe and Roisin – are best friends who’d do anything for each other. They’re close enough to dish out home truths and some tough love but ultimately they’re in this together. I love the outdoors and believe that a walk along the clifftops or a day out cycling can make you feel absolutely fabulous so the wellness retreat in my story is based on these principles. We have a good laugh at some of the more bizarre wellness trends that are out there and I’m afraid some celebrity fads are well and truly ridiculed!

The setting is fictional but typical of many villages here. Northumberland was invaded by Vikings back in AD 793 and they landed in Lindisfarne first. I was fascinated by this so decided that my village would have a Nordic history. I discovered that the old Norse word for serene was kyrr so named the village Kyrrby, or Serenity Bay, and I took the liberty of making the main love interest Thor-like; tall and blond with a love of the sea. If the book is ever made into a film, I definitely want Chris Hemsworth playing that role!

Summer at Serenity Bay is a feel-good adventure. I hope readers escape for a while and emerge with a huge smile on their faces and a desire to come and see our beaches. I’ll look forward to meeting you!
