MY REVIEW

I found this to be a totally absorbing regency romance, with an element of The Beauty and the Beast thrown in for good measure!

Sophy has never had an easy life, and when she finds herself having to flee France where she has made her home for many years, she can only think of one place to go home to – and that is to return to the Ravensbourne Estate.  She grew up here after losing her mother, and was taken in by the family and Fitz is her only real ‘family’ now, even though his father never married her mother as she died before their impending wedding.

Her first impression of Fitz as a child was one of horror, as he had suffered a badly burned face years earlier.  The cruelty of people throughout his life had left Fitz to become almost a recluse, so to hear from Sophy again isn’t what he was expecting and he resents having to look after his ‘stepsister’.

He has so many unanswered questions when she returns but times have made her very reluctant to trust people, especially when her past is revealed and what had caused her to flee France in the first place.  But as they spend time together their bond strengthens and as he’s due to be married to an unsuitable woman, Sophy finds herself getting more involved in his life and sees past the scars that used to scare her and makes her ashamed of her reaction.

I loved the whole setting of this story and the different aspects of Sophy and her personality.  For someone who was acting as a spy, she often comes across as very insecure and unsure of her place in the world, but when she returns ‘home’ she feels more assured. Fitz is another wonderful character as he’s bound by duty, but deeply hurt by people and their reaction to him, even after all these years.

A confident and scintillating debut! I really look forward to more from this author in the future!

MY REVIEW

This book was a polished story from start to finish and I can’t wait to read more from this author!  There is suspense from the opening pages and a thrilling story follow which is full of  corruption, deception and has a pulsating ending that I think I’m still recovering from!!

Nicole gets quite a shock to her world when she hears of the death of Dr Mason Palmer on his return from Africa  and as she tries to get her life back on track working in a school, she is rocked by a letter out of the blue reporting to be from her dead husband! As she tries to figure out if she is the victim of a cruel hoax, or if he actually is still alive she is drawn into such a murky world that you really can’t second guess what she will find out next and what kind of world her husband was mixed up in.  It also touches on the school world that Nicole inhabits – the fact she deals with conflicts there everyday from the children to the parents, stands her in good stead for trying to get to the bottom of her husband and his disappearance.

I loved the fact that this story was told from a number of POV’s – there was always something going on and having so many different angles to the story really helped you lose yourself in the intrigue and scandal that was being uncovered.  I also loved the fact that all the characters were so persistent!  They never considered giving up on finding out the truth or putting an end to the drama – be they the victims, investigators or perpetrators!

A dynamic and engrossing read!

MY REVIEW

A wonderful and fitting ending to an extraordinary Trilogy – if you haven’t read this series yet and you love tales of fantasy, magic and folklore, then I highly recommend these books by Katherine Arden as I’ve been captivated from start to finish, and am eager to go back and read them all again very soon!!

In this final part Vasya is back and is cast as the bad guy and is hellbent on righting those wrongs and save those she loves. There is heartbreak, humour and heroic actions throughout as she travels through different worlds, meeting the weird, the wonderful and the dangerous along the way. I laughed, I cried ( a lot!) and it was just one of those stories that took you to places you least expected, let alone you could ever imagine and Vasya seems to be one of those characters who has her flaws but still manages to get you onside. Pity anyone who crosses her!!

This part of the trilogy is definitely the darkest and the most complex of all 3 books, but such an absorbing read and I’m really going to miss the characters and world that was created – thank you Katherine Arden!!
