MY REVIEW

The perfect blend of romance, mystery and drama – all set in the wonderful setting of Borteen Bay. This is book 5 in the series, but very easily read as a standalone and is the perfect festive read!

Justin is the focus of this story and he moved to the Bay 5 years ago. What prompted his sudden move and his aversion to the festive period soon become clear, and you wonder if he’s ever going to be able to move on in his life and embrace the tinsel and baubles of Christmas!

When he encounters a mystery woman on the beach, it seems clear his path to a happier life may soon be on the cards! But she has secrets of her own and he is intrigued by her. Silvie is her name and she is finding life tough and seems on tenterhooks permanently. She wants to get away from something and is reluctant to let people into her life.

But there’s an ease and instant connection between Justin and Silvie – maybe their past experiences bond them, and I just loved seeing how well they clicked and how they supported one another in trying to move forward in their lives!

There’s plenty of unexpected drama along the way that really adds to the tension and I loved the mix of light and dark!! Fabulous festive fiction!!

Over to you Morton…….

My fifth novel for Choc Lit Christmas at the Little Beach Cafe is a contemporary romance which begins with Borteen’s solicitor, Justin Sadler, who hates Christmas, meeting a mystery woman on the beach, who soon needs his help.

The back of the book says:-

Run away to the little beach café this Christmas …

Since then, he’s tried his best to ignore the festive season and, as he sits in the little beach café and reflects on that fateful night when his life was turned upside down, he expects his fifth Christmas alone to be no different to any of the others since he made his escape.

This can be read as a stand-alone novel, but Justin Sadler, Borteen’s solicitor has made brief appearances in some of my other books for Choc Lit, Christmas at Borteen Bay and Sunny Days at the Beach. It felt time to give him his own story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Morton lives with her husband, two sons and Lily, the tiny white dog, in Worcestershire, U.K. She has been reading and writing fiction for as long as she can remember, penning her first attempt at a novel aged fourteen. She is a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and The Society of Authors.

Her debut novel The Girl on the Beach was published after she won the Choc Lit Publishing’s Search for a Star competition in 2016. This story follows a woman with a troubled past as she tries to unravel the mystery surrounding her son’s new headteacher, Harry Dixon.

Morton’s second book for Choc Lit, The Truth Lies Buried is another romantic suspense novel, The story of Jenny Simpson and Carver Rodgers as they uncover secrets from their past.

Christmas at Borteen Bay was Morton’s first Christmas novella. It is set in her fictional seaside town of Borteen and follows the story of Pippa Freeman, who runs the Rose Court Guest House with her mother, and local policeman Ethan Gibson, as they unravel a family secret as Christmas approaches.

Her summer 2020 book is Sunny Days at the Beach, the story of what happens when craft shop owner, Mandy Vanes takes in abandoned teenager Nick Crossten. A stranger, Graham Frankley turns up saying that he has had a letter from Nick’s mum to tell him he is Nick’s father.

Morton previously worked in the electricity industry in committee services, staff development and training. She has a Business Studies degree and is a fully qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Reiki Master. She also has diplomas in Tuina acupressure massage and energy field therapy. She enjoys crafts, history and loves tracing family trees. Having a hunger for learning new things is a bonus for the research behind her books.

MY REVIEW

Mandy is living the dream – or is she?! Single, partying and running her own craft business is what she always dreamed of! But the mornings after are beginning to take their toll and in this story her life is about to change dramatically and I loved every minute of her journey of discovering what is really important to her and how life can turn upside down overnight!

She has always had a soft spot for Nick, a young local artist who has sold his artwork in her shop, but when he is left alone by his mum who disappears one night, the person he turns to is Mandy who immediately steps into the foster mum role wonderfully.  She just wants the best for this young man, and he seems so pleased to have someone finally taking care of him! Add into the mix a stranger who shows up claiming to be his Dad and the story follows them all adapting to these new roles and a new life that could be starting for them.

Seeing Mandy have this change of outlook on life was really fascinating, especially with her past coming back to play a part in her life.  It really lets you see her in a different light from her party girl image and gives you a good insight why she did go off the rails over recent years.

I also found it interesting to see things from the viewpoint of Graham, who is faced with becoming a father to a teenager he knew nothing about.  Mixed in with new problems with his business, it was fascinating to see him approach life with a new outlook – nothing seems to phase him!

I think this story showed just how quickly your life can change and how you react impacts on those around you.  The characters of Mandy and Graham were a delight especially in their mature outlook on the situation – good to have some decent role models around and not ones who want to shirk responsibility!

A really enjoyable read!! Highly recommended!

My fourth novel for Choc Lit Sunny Days at the Beach is a contemporary romance with more than its fair share of intrigue and mystery. The book features Mandy Vanes, who runs Owl Corner Crafts in my fictional seaside town of Borteen. Mandy arrives at work one morning to find teenager, Nick Crossten sitting on the craft centre steps. He is distraught as he tells Mandy that his mother has left him home alone and gone off with her boyfriend to start a new life. As if that wasn’t enough, gin distiller, Graham Frankley arrives on the scene and tells the pair that Nick’s mum has written to him to say that he’s Nick’s dad!

The back of the book says:-

Could this mean that Mandy the party girl is finally ready to grow up?

This can be read as a stand-alone novel, but both Mandy Vanes and Nick Crossten have appeared as secondary characters in my previous novels for Choc Lit, The Girl on the Beach my debut novel which won Choc Lit’s Search for a Star competition in 2016, The Truth Lies Buried and Christmas at Borteen Bay.

For those of you who wonder about the inspiration for my books, the hero of this novel actually sprang to life from a spark of interest when I was reading a magazine article about a small craft gin distillery. My unsuspecting husband was then treated to my research trip when I took him on a tour of a gin distillery for his birthday!

MY REVIEW

At only 171 pages long this sure does pack a lot in and will keep you gripped and entertained throughout.  Pippa Freeman has bad memories of Christmas and isn’t too excited by the upcoming festivities.  She helps run a guesthouse with her mum and when a tragedy strikes the community, it uncovers some family secrets that some hoped wouldn’t see the light of day.

Ethan is the local police officer and was at school with Pippa, and has harboured a crush on her for a number of years.  As he helps her deal with things she has seen and is dealing with, she begins to see him in a whole new light and their time spent together is very sweet and endearing.

When the truth comes out about the identity of the man on the beach, there’s a whole lot of emotion for Pippa to deal with and the support network she has is much needed!  There’s also time for old grudges to come back into focus and thankfully shows how the healing power of time can help people forgive and forget!

I found this to be a really enthralling read as there is so much going on.  It’s not your normal Christmas read – light and fluffy it is not! – but it features an idyllic seaside setting and shows the power of friends and family when times get tough.

The Truth Lies Buried by Morton S Gray #BookReview #PublicationDay

Another gripping read from Choc Lit’s Search for a Star winner and a return to the beautifully described fictional seaside town of Borteen Bay.
Two children in a police waiting room, two distressed mothers, a memory only half remembered …

When Jenny Simpson returns to the seaside town of Borteen, her childhood home, it’s for a less than happy reason. But it’s also a chance for her to start again.

A new job leads to her working for Carver Rodgers, a man who lives alone in a house that looks like it comes from the pages of a fairy tale – until you see the disaster zone inside …
As Jenny gets to know Carver she begins to unravel the sadness that has led to his chaotic existence. Gradually they realise they have something in common that is impossible to ignore – and it all links back to a meeting at a police station many years before.
Could the truth lie just beneath their feet?

MY REVIEW

This was a fantastic read that I raced through as I just loved seeing how things played out for the main character, Jenny, and all those around her as they struggled to piece together the mysteries that had plagued their lives for so long.

Jenny returns to Borteen, her childhood home, in very sad circumstances. She’s lost her mother and her life has been put on hold while she nursed her through ill health. Her father went missing 25 years ago so she is feeling very alone, but old schoolfriends appear in her life when she needs their support and she soon finds herself feeling very much part of the community and wanting to use that strength to move on with her life. Someone suggests she takes up cleaning to help her decide what she wants to do with her life, and she soon gets her first client and she’s thrown in the deep end with what she faces!

Carver is grieving for his wife Bliss and has given up, seemingly, on himself and living a normal existence. His brother in law hires a cleaner to help start the massive clean up in his home and when Jenny turns up he’s a little reluctant to let anyone in. It soon becomes clear though that they have a past together and this bond brings them closer together and eager to get to the bottom of the mystery that has left them missing a part of themselves for so long. This leads to some dark and rather startling revelations that both weren’t expecting

The characters in this book were the main reason I loved this book so much! Jenny is so easy to like and you feel for her as she goes out of her way to help Carver, whilst still grieving for her own loss. And Carver (swoon!!) is dealing with life by burying his head in the sand but finds peace living in the woods and just needs someone like Jenny to let him see that it is possible to move on but still remember those he has lost.

The finale was really tense and a fabulous way to end the story and I just wanted to read more! Highly recommended!!
