My Bookish 2021 Resolutions……

Well, I’m going to try and keep them anyway!!! I don’t normally do many resolutions as it doesn’t end well, BUT maybe 2021 is the year to make things stick and to get in to some new good habits!!
And good habits are what I need on the bookish front!  While I do my best to stay organised, it’s normally organised chaos and I have a tendency to lose the plot at times, so this year ahead is my chance to change things…… stop laughing!!
So here’s a few little resolutions I’m hoping to keep.. and we’ll see how it all goes!!  If this post gets deleted before the end of January, you’ll know it has been a big fail!!

1.  Netgalley
My favourite place!! But the shelves are currently way too crammed with books that I had good intentions of reading before publication but failed too! I even wrote the publication dates on my calendar to try and organise my reading schedule around – nope, didn’t work!  So this year I will be more restrained on accumulating new titles and do my best to catch up on the backlog….

2.  Book buying!!
I could say I’m not going to buy ANY books all year…. but we know that isn’t going to happen! So this year I plan to be more thoughtful with my book purchasing!!  I have had a tendency in the past to notice a title online and rush out and buy it, only for it to sit on the shelves for months/years unopened! This year I’ll be writing down titles that interest me in a notebook to keep track of them all and then see if my interest holds out after a while and then treat myself!!

3. Blog Tours
I love them! It is so nice to be part of them all and they’ve introduced me to so many amazing books I never would normally have known about! But I do have a habit of signing up for too many and then feeling under pressure to read by the date – it’s like homework! So I hope to be a little more selective and restrict myself to a few each month, knowing that I’ll be able to manage the reading schedule better!

4. Audiobooks
The end of 2020 made me listen to more audiobooks, via the library app, as it meant I could multi-task and listen to a book whilst doing cross stitch or playing Uno on the Switch!  And that’s made me very happy so it needs to be done more often!  Still finding my way on what speed I like listening to them at – normal speed just seems too slow to me!

5. Read, Review, Repeat
This year I have found the reading part of blogging very easy! The reviewing not so much and I’ve been known to build up a backlog of reviews as I just keep launching into a new book and then by the time I get round to writing the review I’ve forgotten lots of bits!! So I’m hoping this new year I will get better at writing a review straight after I’ve read the book! Even if it’s just a saved draft copy!

6. Bookshelves
Out of control! That is all!! This needs to be remedied!! Why am I holding on to books I’m not going to read again? Obviously I’ll keep favourites, signed copies, proofs etc, but I need to be more ruthless in ‘letting go’ of books to give them  a new home with a new reader! They also need to be better organised as they’re a bit of a mish mash at the moment, with books read mixed in with books on the TBR pile! A work in progress..

7.  Notebooks
I need to write down notes as I read a book as I have a memory like a sieve! So this means I have a nice collection of notebooks to use but also find myself using different notebooks for various different review notes! This doesn’t make life easy when I’m looking back for a review and can’t remember which notebook I’ve used! So I need to streamline the system and just use one or two notebooks from now on, instead of the multitude I use now… obviously this won’t stop me buying notebooks because stationery innit!!

8.  Social Media
The pointless scrolling needs to stop!! Twitter especially!! I love my Twitter timeline and all the lovely people that appear on it BUT it has a hypnotic effect on me as I ‘just’ scroll through one more time in case I missed something! And in the book world, there’s always something going on, a competition, a shout out for proofs available, a new reading challenge to join in with…… time needs to be restricted!!

9.  Calendar
I’ve found that by having a separate ‘book’ calendar with publication dates etc on it, has really helped me keep up with various books in the past so I need to carry this over into 2021.  It just gave me a little more focus and helped me shape my reading plan for the weeks ahead – if only I could remember to update the calendar every now and then with release dates as I get them!

10. Read the books you enjoy!
It’s so easy, especially now with social media, to pick up a book that everyone else is talking about because of FOMO.  But I’ve often found that some of those talked about books just don’t gel well with me reading wise! And then I get annoyed at myself for wasting valuable bookish time just to fit in! So no more! I will just pick up a book I choose that fits with my mood at the time and enjoy myself!!

📚📚📚

So there we have it! I’m going to fail miserably aren’t I?!! 🤣🤣🤣
What bookish resolutions will you make, if any?! I wish you luck if you do decide to make some!

HAPPY READING!!

My October TBR! #bookblogger

Time to get myself organised again!! How on earth we’ve got to October already this year is beyond me, but it’s been such a wonderful bookish year so far and I’m hoping the last 3 months will carry on in the same vein.  And if the piles of books surrounding me are anything to go by, then I need to keep the pace up!  Up to now I, so GoodReads tells me!, have managed to read 197 books so far this year which has gone way beyond the target I set myself! It’s amazing how much you can get read when there’s not much to watch on TV and you do your best to stay offline! Although being online to browse books and blogs is actively encouraged!

So with a few more challenges to complete left for the year, alongside book club reads and blog tour books, here’s a look at the books I’m hoping to pick up over the next month!

👻👻👻

A View of the Harbour by Elizabeth Taylor

 – the latest pick for the Elizabeth Taylor Reading Project

The Light in the Dark by Horatio Clare

Ahead of the Blog Tour

Where the What Ifs roam and the moon is Louis Armstrong by Esther Krivda

Another blog tour read! And it’s over 650 pages long!

The Coffin Path by Katherine Clements

Hoping to read more spooky books for the RIPXIII challenge!

The Puppet Show by M.W.Craven

Another spooky read for October!

My Netgalley shelf also needs some ‘attention’ this month so hoping to get through a few of these! That includes some ‘Christmas’ reads too! Hope I’m feeling festive by then!!

The Paris Secret by Lily Graham

The Warning by Kathryn Croft

A Gift from the Comfort Food Cafe by Debbie Johnson

The Christmas Cafe at Seashell Cove by Karen Clarke

A Christmas Secret by Kirsty Ferry

👻👻👻

So I’ve got Halloween and Christmas covered for the month ahead! Have you read any of these?! Is your October TBR list spooky or festive too?!  I’m sure a few other books will be finding their way on to the list throughout the month  – let’s hope the reading slump vibe doesn’t hit!

HAPPY READING!!

My 2018 Reading Intentions!

I’ve seen a few of these posts in the last few days and it has inspired me to ‘try’ and organise myself on the reading front and see what I have to look forward to in 2018, and see if I can enjoy another fabulous reading year! At the time of typing I have managed to read 207 books throughout 2017 – with 3 looking like they might be finished by the time the year comes to an end – and I didn’t plan on reading that many at the start of the year! I had set my target at 150, but numbers have never been that important to me so if it wasn’t for GoodReads keeping track I’d be none the wiser!!  I do find that if you end up just concentrating on numbers then it takes away the enjoyment from reading – it isn’t a race!!! We’re not competing in the reading olympics, and I have just found this year that the more I read, the quicker I become at reading!  And not all books are 600 + page chunksters, some have been audio books, short story collections and graphic novels, and I have found mixing things up this way has really helped me avoid too many of those ‘reading slump’ spells that we all fear!!

So how can I improve my reading for 2018?! Erm, I can’t!! But I am hoping to be a little more organised! I have found this year that I have jotted down notes in a number of notebooks – because who can resist a stationery buying spree eh!? – and then I lose track of said notebooks and get myself in a tizzy trying to find all my notes so I can remember who everyone was in a book! So I am hoping to streamline that part of the process in the hope it gives me extra reading time!  I’ve also started to note down release dates and blog tour dates on a separate book calendar so hoping I can remember to keep that up to date and hopefully then seeing a date coming up with a book title on will help guide me in choosing my next reads, and keep track of my reading that way! Have you found a good way to be organised with your reading?! Always happy to receive tips and advice on that front if you’d like to share your hints in the comments!

Reading challenges have become such a fun part of my reading year so I’m looking forward to finding one or two to take part in again this year! I’m also hoping to set myself a reading challenge – I have 12 Persephone books on my shelves so the plan is (!)  to read one a month!   I always say I’m going to do this with classics but it has never taken off for me, so hopefully this will give me the kick in the butt I need to start going through those books that I have on my shelves looking ‘pretty’! Pretty books need to be read too!!!

I think my GoodReads number will be set at 150 again and I’d be lost without this resource as I use it for noting down my reviews before adding them to my Blog or review sites.  I found a little notebook the other day that I used to use for noting down books I’d read, but it only had a comment ‘really enjoyed it’, ‘funny’, ‘good’ etc by the side of it so the majority of them I could hardly remember reading!  Yes my memory really is that bad!  Even then when I looked at the blurb of the books I had very little recollection of the book, so I’m thankful for GoodReads for helping me add a little more to each review to help jog my poor old memory bank!

Trying not to request books on NetGalley, Twitter and all those other evil sites where ARC’s are available, is going to be something else I need to try and ‘moderate’!  I do think it is the fault of the publishers for releasing so many books that sound amazing, but I think I need to be more selective – I know I WANT  to read ALL THE BOOKS but I just can’t!  Thankfully I think I know the genres and subjects that I enjoy now so that helps me narrow it down a lot, but I just need to stop being like a kid in a sweet shop and show some restraint!

And that goes for buying books too! I know I say the same every year and usually fail by 2nd January, but I think I have become a little more responsible on the book buying front! I will wait longer now before having to have a copy of whatever book has taken my fancy, and I still have a squillion (actual amount!) of unread books sitting on my bookshelves waiting for me to read them and I do feel guilty when I look at them sitting there unread!  So I will be good in 2018………

As always I’d like to reduce my procastinating!! And the internet is  a great big swallower of time for me!! But it’s also the best place to find out all the bookish news so it isn’t going to be easy!!  I’ve tried listening to audio books whilst I’m surfing online but find my mind wanders so I end up not listening and only concentrating on the web, so can only really listen to audio books while I’m doing cross-stitch or playing silly games – Fishdom is my current downfall! – so I must find ways of finding out bookish news without having to surf the interweb!!

So we will see how things go with my intentions!  Do you have any plans to help you with your reading year?! It has been fascinating to read how other people approach their outlook on reading so if you’ve done a post on this then feel free to link it below in the comments for me to go and be nosey at!!

HAPPY READING!!

Down the TBR Hole #11

I am back for  more organising fun!!  Still not quite there in being as streamlined as I want to be, so the process continues and I’m sure I’ll be uncovering more books that I had completely forgotten about! Beginning to wonder if I should be a little concerned about how many books I add that I have no recollection of when I look back!!

Very grateful to Lia @ Lost In A Story for thinking this little exercise up to help us all keep our growing TBR lists in some kind of order and under control!!  Let’s see what goodies/awful titles I’d wiped from my memory this time round……

Here is how it all works….

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
THE DAY I LOST YOU by FIONNUALA KEARNEY

The day I lost you was the day I discovered your secret life.

The day I lost you was the day you tore our family apart.

Really love the cover of this one, and the story does sound like a bit of an emotional rollercoaster! Might be a good read for a dark winter night!

THE TRIALS OF THE KING OF HAMPSHIRE by ELIZABETH FOYSTER

Every family has its skeletons, but in 1823 the grand Wallop family was about to share theirs with the world. The 3rd earl of Portsmouth was a peculiar man but, by most accounts, a harmless one. An aristocrat of enormous wealth, he kept company with England’s most famous names, inviting Jane Austen to balls and having Lord Byron as chief witness to his second marriage. For the first fifty years of his life he had moved with ease in high society, but at the age of fifty-five his own family set out to have him declared insane.
Elizabeth Foyster invites us into Freemasons’ Hall for the most extraordinary, expensive and controversial British insanity trial ever heard. Amid accusations of abductions, sodomy, blackmail and violence, jurors have to decide if Portsmouth is just a shy, stammering eccentric with foolish habits or a sinister madman attempting to mask his dangerous and immoral nature. Both provocative and heart-rending, The Trials of the King of Hampshire goes beyond the fate of a single man to question Georgian society and examine the treatment of the mentally ill and disabled both then and now

During Non-fiction November, I have rediscovered my love for non-fiction so spotting this one on my shelves has sparked my interest again!

THE GIRL FROM THE SAVOY by HAZEL GAYNOR

Dolly Lane is a dreamer; a downtrodden maid who longs to dance on the London stage, but her life has been fractured by the Great War. Memories of the soldier she loved, of secret shame and profound loss, by turns pull her back and spur her on to make a better life.

When she finds employment as a chambermaid at London’s grandest hotel, The Savoy, Dolly takes a step closer to the glittering lives of the Bright Young Things who thrive on champagne, jazz and rebellion. Right now, she must exist on the fringes of power, wealth and glamor—she must remain invisible and unimportant.

But her fortunes take an unexpected turn when she responds to a struggling songwriter’s advertisement for a ‘muse’ and finds herself thrust into London’s exhilarating theatre scene and into the lives of celebrated actress, Loretta May, and her brother, Perry. Loretta and Perry may have the life Dolly aspires to, but they too are searching for something.

Now, at the precipice of the life she has and the one she longs for, the girl from The Savoy must make difficult choices: between two men; between two classes, between everything she knows and everything she dreams of. A brighter future is tantalizingly close—but can a girl like Dolly ever truly leave her past behind

I do like the sound of this but there doesn’t seem to be enough to get me to read it anytime soon.

THE LITTLE PIECES OF YOU AND ME by VANESSA GREENE

Best friends Isla and Sophie made each other a promise a long time ago: to never let life pass them by. Years later, Isla is in love, living abroad and fulfilling her dreams. But for Sophie, things haven’t turned out the way she was expecting and she hasn’t achieved any of the things she and Isla talked about. And then, in one sudden moment, life irrevocably changes for both women.

Isla and Sophie have hard decisions to make but above all else they must face up to the uncertainty that lies ahead. It’s only when they realise that this is easier together, two friends standing side by side, that each woman can embrace whatever the future holds for them.

This has a few mixed reviews but I have read others from this author and enjoy her writing style.

And they’ve come to earth to have fun. “Louie” follows fisherman Billy Morton home one day and he and his family come quickly to love the playful alien. I enjoyed The DiceMan by this author, and this sounds just as mad so might be good for a change despite more mixed reviews!

The cover is very pretty but the blurb has left me feeling a little flat…

WAKE IN WINTER by NADEZHDA BELENKAYA

Nina’s graduate program at Moscow University isn’t exactly cheap. So when she is offered work translating for Spanish families looking to adopt orphans from the provincial town of Rogozhin, she quickly agrees. But soon she finds that nothing is as it seems. By the time Nina realizes that all too often the business of international adoption is not a humanitarian enterprise, she’s in too deep. Will she be able to navigate a world of exploitation and political corruption in order to help the children? Or should she return to the much simpler world of academia and leave the orphans behind?

Wake in Winter is a captivating story of one woman’s choice in the face of a shattering discovery

Not sure why this was on my list! I think there must be gremlins adding books to my TBR list!!

I am back!! The organising of books is still in need of some serious attention so time to attack the TBR list again from GoodReads to see what goodies (and baddies) that I’ve added over the years and forgotten about!!  With some of them I am beginning to think that I either add them while I’m asleep, or there is a ghost me that just adds random books as a laugh!!  Can’t all be my doing surely??!!!

Very grateful to Lia @ Lost In A Story for thinking this little exercise up to help us all keep our growing TBR lists in some kind of order and under control!!  Let’s see what goodies/awful titles I’d wiped from my memory this time round……

THE COUNTENANCE DIVINE by MICHAEL HUGHES

DIVINE

An ambitious, engrossing and multi-layered debut novel

‘Michael Hughes writes like a brilliant cross between David Mitchell and Hilary Mantel’ Toby Litt

In 1999 a programmer is trying to fix the millennium bug, but can’t shake the sense he’s been chosen for something.

In 1888, five women are brutally murdered in the East End by a troubled young man in thrall to a mysterious master.

In 1777 an apprentice engraver called William Blake has a defining spiritual experience; thirteen years later this vision returns.

And in 1666, poet and revolutionary John Milton completes the epic for which he will be remembered centuries later.

But where does the feeling come from that the world is about to end?

That cover!! Wonder why I put this one on the list?!  And by the reviews it seems to be one of those ‘marmite’ books – either loved or hated! So I think that has tempted me a little more to give it a try..

Another psychological thriller and I’m not sure if I’ve had my fill of the genre for a while but then again there are some good reviews….

VERDICT – KEEP (for now!)

THE ONE HUNDRED NIGHTS OF HERO by ISABEL GREENBERG

hero

In the tradition of The Arabian Nights, a beautifully illustrated tapestry of folk tales and myths about the secret legacy of female storytellers in an imagined medieval world.

In the Empire of Migdal Bavel, Cherry is married to Jerome, a wicked man who makes a diabolical wager with his friend Manfred: if Manfred can seduce Cherry in one hundred nights, he can have his castle–and Cherry.

But what Jerome doesn’t know is that Cherry is in love with her maid Hero. The two women hatch a plan: Hero, a member of the League of Secret Story Tellers, will distract Manfred by regaling him with a mesmerizing tale each night for 100 nights, keeping him at bay. Those tales are beautifully depicted here, touching on themes of love and betrayal and loyalty and madness.

As intricate and richly imagined as the works of Chris Ware, and leavened with a dry wit that rivals Kate Beaton’s in Hark! A Vagrant, Isabel Greenberg’s One Hundred Nights of Hero will capture readers’ hearts and minds, taking them through a magical medieval world.

Another recommendation from the many BookTube channels I view, this sounds like an amazing escapism read with beautiful illustrations..

VERDICT – KEEP!!

So 3 have made it off my list for now! Have I made the right choices?! Do I need to put some back or add some more to go?! Always happy to hear your advice!!!

Down the TBR Hole #9

hello all!! I’m back again with another little rummage through my TBR pile on GoodReads to see if I can begin to make any sense of it all – so far, not so good LOL!! I just think I’m destined  to be overwhelmed by the number and variety of books on the pile!!  What is it with books that leads us all astray all the time?!!  They say less is more, not when it comes to books it seems!!!

Click on the title if you’d like to read the blurb for each book via GoodReads…

The Swimming Pool by Louise Candlish

I am a little concerned by the split in reviews!  Some seem to love it, others hate it!! And I immediately think that I’d probably be in the hate camp which puts me off starting it! Can i toss a coin to decide on this one??!!   Maybe I’ll read one chapter…..

Verdict – KEEP (but it’s 50/50!!)

Arcadia by Iain Pears

I have started this and it has got off to a bit of a slow start, but I’ve heard so many good things about this that I think it is one I need to stick with and invest some real time in to enjoy!!

Verdict – KEEP!!

In Another Life by Carys Jones

This book has a really interesting concept with fantasy elements and that is what drew me in to add it to my TBR pile.  Could be good for a rainy day…

Verdict – KEEP!

The Trees by Ali Shaw

That cover!!! Do I need to say anymore?!!  Sometimes, that’s all the reason I need to keep a book!! Shallow?! Who me?!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Rare Objects by Kathleen Tessaro

I have a couple of other Kathleen Tessaro novels on my bookshelves, so think I added this one to complete the set, although I’m still to read any of her other ones! Not sure which one to start with?!

Verdict – GO!!

Lie With Me by Sabine Durrant

I’m feeling a little ‘psychological drama’ book fatigue at the moment (is it me or are there just too many?!) so I think I added this when the genre was starting off, but not sure it is for me now.

Verdict – GO!!

The Secret of Orchard Cottage by Alexandra Brown

I always enjoy books from this author and the rather picturesque cover got me interested in reading this one!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Always with Love by Giovanna Fletcher

Giovanna seems a staple now in the romance fiction market, and always seems to create a wonderful world to escape into! Read the first in this series quite a while ago now, so looking forward to getting back to the characters very soon!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Foxlowe by Eleanor Wasserberg

Torn with this one too!! The cover is a stunner so that is why I picked it up, but it appears from other reviews that it has split the reading community! Another one that I might need to approach with a couple of chapters and see how I get on with it!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Smoke by Dan Vyleta

Another book I was drawn to for the cover and blurb, and it seems another book that has split those who have read it!  The premise sounds fascinating!  Think I’m going to have to give it a try and see if I ‘get it’!

Verdict – KEEP!!

The Paris Secret by Karen Swan

Another gorgeous, dreamy cover! But I need to get tougher and wonder why I’ve still not got round to picking it up to read?!

Verdict – GO!!

The Garden Awakening by Mary Reynolds

I always love reading about gardens and different approaches to gardening and this sounds like something a little different!

Verdict  – KEEP!!

The Terracotta Bride by Zen Cho

Added this to the TBR pile after reading Sorcerer to the Crown by the same author – which I loved. This seems to be a Kindle novella.

Verdict – GO!!

Sunshine over Wildflower Cottage by Milly Johnson

An author who I always turn to for a fun, comforting read and this sounds like another story right up my street!!

Verdict – KEEP!!

This Savage Song by V.E.Schwab

I love the Darker Shade of Magic series, so looking forward to reading different work from the author! Ooh and i got a signed copy so this is definitely being kept!!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Well that went quite well, although not well enough if i’m ever going to regain control of the TBR pile!! Have I made the right choices?! Or have I kept the wrong ones, and chucked out some stunners?! Please feel free to let me know your opinions! I can be swayed to change!!

HAPPY READING!!

Down the TBR hole #8

I have returned to the world of organising my bookshelves!!! Well, for one week at least!!  With the amount of books that have made their way into my world recently I really should be eager to get on top of the TBR mountain that is now consuming every room in the house as I run out of space – thank the lord for many copies being of the ‘e’ variety so I can pretend they don’t exist!!

Very grateful to Lia @ Lost In A Story for thinking this little exercise up to help us all keep our growing TBR lists in some kind of order and under control!!  Let’s see what goodies/awful titles I’d wiped from my memory this time round……

Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

Still to read the first in this series –  Red Queen – I do enjoy escaping into fantasy series so hopefully I can maybe do the whole series together, although heard a few disappointing reviews about this one… that is slightly offputting!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen

Not sure where I heard about this series, but it sounds fabulous!! Magic?! Yes please! I’m sold!!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Worlds of Ink and Shadow by Lena Coakley

Another one of those books that I don’t remember adding.  I’m a little intrigued as I re-read the blurb but not enough to make me dive straight in.

Verdict – GO!!

A Quiet Life by Natasha Walter

I’m fascinated by those who live double lives and this sounds a really interesting spy thriller!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Half A King by Joe Abercrombie

OOh a tree on the cover? Oooh and a fantasy series?! Tell me more!!!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Death of an Owl by Paul Torday

Yep, there’s an owl on the cover so that’s what grabbed my attention!  It does sound like something very different from my normal reads but I don’t think there’s enough pull for me to pick this up anytime soon.  Still love the cover though!

Verdict – GO!!

At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier

I’m yet to read anything by this author, and I keep hearing of how well she captures the historical elements of a story.  A mix of reviews is making me think I should maybe try something else of hers first?

Verdict – GO!!

Who’s that Girl? by Mhairi McFarlane

Always looking for light, fun reads and I’ve heard good things about this one.  My brain needs lighter reads on the TBR mountain!!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Finding Sarah by Wendy Lou Jones

Drawn in by the gorgeous blooms on the cover, I’m intrigued by this one as it has received some rave reviews but only 21 of them so hopefully I can add to the reviewer list soon!

Verdict – KEEP!!

The Perfect Girl by Gilly MacMillan

Is it wrong that the fact that it’s recommended for fans of Girl on the Train and Gone Girl has put me right off reading this one??!

Verdict – GO!!

Ooh a whole 4 books off the TBR mountain!! I think that’s a record!!  Ooh this means I have gaps on my shelves again! I think I need to rectify this immediately…….. uh-oh!!! #fail

So have I made the right choices of ones to keep or get rid of?! I’m easily swayed so please let me know if I’ve made the wrong decisions!! I won’t swear at you… honest!!

HAPPY READING!!

Down the TBR Hole #7

I have returned to blitz my bookshelves!!  My organising  has gone a little off track in the past couple of weeks, so I’m sat here watching Agent Carter (another one of those shows that I loved and they cancelled it way too early!!) and making a to do list again of all I want to sort out! And top of the list is books!! As always!!  So time to see if I can reduce the TBR mountain to a TBR hill……. I’m not holding out much hope but a girl can dream!!

Very grateful to Lia @ Lost In A Story for thinking this little exercise up to help us all keep our growing TBR lists in some kind of order and under control!!  Let’s see what goodies/awful titles I’d wiped from my memory this time round……

These Days of Ours by Juliet Ashton

Think I must have added this to the list through a GoodReads competition – you know when they make you add it to your TBR list in order to get an entry?! – and I do love the cover but re-reading the blurb hasn’t made me want to rush to read it.

Verdict – GO!

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – Camille Rose Garcia version

Stumbled across these versions of classic books that have been illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia and adore the style she uses so had to rush out and start creating my own collection! And any excuse to re-read Alice in Wonderland is always fine by me!!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Sold to me on the basis that it is the perfect read for geeks who loved the 80’s and 90’s, how could I say no!!  And now there is a movie to be released very soon… definitely need to bump it up the TBR pile!!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Always love a good fantasy series and I have heard rave things about this – but then I’ve also heard not so rave reviews so I’m a little bit concerned it could be a marmite read! I’ll either love it or hate it!! Only time will tell I guess!

Verdict – KEEP!!

The Olive Branch by Jo Thomas

Got this as a summer read as I do love a story that is set in sunnier lands, and of those that try something new in their life.  But just haven’t been tempted to dive in.

Verdict – GO!!

The Silk Merchant’s Daughter by Dinah Jefferies

I adored The Separation and The Tea Planter’s Wife from this author so have been eager to read anything she releases so hoping this lives up to her previous standards!

Verdict – KEEP!!

Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt

I am not a big horror fan!!  In fact I’m a big scaredy cat! But I always intend to try some more in the horror genre so I heard good reports about this one – and then the reviews scared me so I’ve put off starting to read it!!  Maybe I should save it for Halloween?!

Verdict – KEEP!!

The Ballroom by Anna Hope

Bought this not long after finishing Wake by this author, as that was a wondeful tale, and I loved the blurb off this one so another that needs to be bumped up the TBR pile!!

Verdict – KEEP!!

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman

Another book I’ve been recommended by friends to read and the start of a series that seems to get nothing but praise!  Do love a good mystery!

Verdict – KEEP!!

The Kindness of Enemies by Leila Aboulela

One of those books that I felt I should read at the time it was released, but not sure it will be my kind of thing now I’m re-reading the blurb

Verdict – GO!!

And another blitz on the shelves is over! Wahoo!!!  And yet more books that need bumping up the TBR pile that I’d forgotten all about!  Nice to see a good mix of genres again in the list! I’m always concerned when I look back at books I’ve added that they’re all going to be a little too alike but it seems that my random attitude towards books continues!!

HAPPY READING!!

Welcome back!! More organising to be done!! If only every aspect of my life could be organised this easily!! Maybe that’s an idea for future blog posts!! Might make sorting through my wardrobe a little easier!!

Very grateful to Lia @ Lost In A Story for thinking this little exercise up to help us all keep our growing TBR lists in some kind of order and under control!!  Let’s see what goodies/awful titles I’d wiped from my memory this time round……

The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge

Who remembers the fuss when this was released?!  And how could I resist such a stunning cover! So why have I not got round to reading this yet?!  Consider myself told off and I’m definitely bumping this up the TBR pile as I need to see if the fuss was right!

Verdict – KEEP!!

The Queen’s Choice by Anne O’Brien

I have my mum to blame for my interest in historical fiction! It is all she reads and she’s always recommending titles to me and this is one of those titles! So I have to do what my mum says right?! 😉

Verdict – KEEP!!

Pawn of the Phoenix by Jamie McLachlan

I loved the first in the series Mind of the Phoenix so can remember being eager to read more, and still I’ve not got round to reading this so would love to find out how the story continues.

Verdict – KEEP!!

Clarity by Loretta Lost

Can’t remember adding this one to begin with, although the cover is very striking, and the blurb and mixed reviews have made my mind up as to whether I want to read it…

Verdict – Go!!

The Children’s Home by Charles Lambert

Other than a bizarre cover and a link to fairy tales,  I can think of no other reason as to why I’ve added this to my list!

Verdict – Go!!

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Think I might be in the minority as to still not have read The Kite Runner – I know, telling myself off again! – so I have heard this is another one of those ‘must read’ books.

Verdict – Keep!!

The Widow by Fiona Barton

Lucky enough to have won a signed copy of this when it was first released so it has been patiently sitting on my shelves since that moment! Heard many good things about this thriller so I look forward to reading it very soon!

Verdict – Keep!!

Wildwood by Colin Meloy, Carson Ellis

I think I heard about this on a BookTube Channel and it just sounded like my kind of book – a bit of fantasy and escapism.  The mixed reviews on GoodReads are a little troubling wrong but think it is going to be one of those books I need to try for myself and give it a chance!

Verdict – Keep!!

The Butterfly Summer by Harriet Evans

Drawn in by the cute cover and the easy to read vibes, but now drawn in enough to pick it up yet even though it sounds like it’s a book that is right up my street.

Verdict – Go!!

The Little Old Lady who Struck Lucky Again by Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg

I remember enjoying the first in this series, The Little Old Lady Who Broke All The Rules, back in 2014 so another one of those that I was interested to follow their exploits but my interest seems to have waned over the years!

Verdict – Go!!

Well, that was more successful as it went on! I was beginning to worry I’d have a clean sweep of keeping them all!! I’m just getting tougher the more tired I become!!  Have I made the right choices?! Dare to make me change my mind?! Would love your comments!!

HAPPY READING!!!

Down the TBR hole #2

I’m back!! And it is time to get organised again!!  Really enjoyed taking part in this post which was started by Lia @ Lost in a Story  so am going to continue in the hope that my GoodReads shelves will start to make some sense and I can then be streamlined in my reading intentions!!

It becomes so easy as a reader and blogger to just keep adding titles to your ‘virtual’ and real life bookshelves, until you reach a point where you end up buying duplicates of books you already have, and you seem to spend more time trying to decide what to read next and losing track of how long a certain book has been in your possession!

After my 1st post I had a really good sort through on GoodReads which seemed to take forever! Half of the titles I couldn’t even remember adding, so I think they may have gone on for Giveaways that I’d entered on the site!! So they’ve all now come off and I’ve only left titles on that in actual book form or in Kindle form (well, some of them anway as i still have a few(!) more to add……..so the pile is now 420!!  Eeek!!  No wonder I have had to purchase another little bookcase recently and I’m hoping this will kick me on to start letting go of more books that I hold on to for no apparent reason!! The local charity shops are going to love me if I can be strong enough and stop the book hoarding!!  So here’s another 10 books from my ‘TBR’ list that need to be dealt with!

Here is how it all works….

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Easy eh!  Right on we go….click on the book title for a link straight to the GoodReads page to find out more about each book!

The Death House by Sarah Pinborough

I remember being quite excited by this when it was released, but obviously not excited enough to read it straight away!!! I’m still a little conflicted after seeing some differing views about it and that is kind of putting me off wanting to even start it and with so many other books to read i think my decision is made..

Judgement – GO!!

The Lost Swimmer by Ann Turner

I was recommended this by a good friend and the cover is such a stunner that I had to get it straight away and it’s been sat on my bookshelf in my bedroom ever since!   Reading the blurb again has just got me all excited to read it once more though so it will definitely be pushed up the TBR pile!

Judgement – KEEP!!

I adored A Man Called Ove so whenever this author has another book out I immediately get a copy and this just sounded so wonderful when it was first released! The reviews all seem pretty stunning too!

Judgement – KEEP!!

I’m going to be very honest here and say the only reason I bought a copy of this book was that it had green pages!!  And gold on the cover! Yes i am that shallow!!  So it looks very lovely on my bookshelf!! The reviews seem very hit and miss with this one so I think it might be one of those that I I will either love or hate so needs to be given a chance!

Judgement – KEEP!! …for now! 😉

When God Was a Rabbit was one of my favourite reads a while back, so I am always interested in seeing what the author of a fave book does next.   And any book with a magical element is normally high on my reading list but I just never seem to have got round to being pulled in to reading this and I think it’s time to get tough…

Judgement  – GO!!

I won a proof of this way back when, and it is a bit of a beast of a book page count wise, and I think that has always put me off!  The reviews seem mostly positive so I think I’m going to be brave and attack those pages!!

Judgement – KEEP!!

I have the paperback version of this and it is another one I’ve heard many good things about but just never made me want to jump in and read it straight away! I think I need to start being tougher…

Judgement – GO!!

something a little different than my normal reads, and it was won via the GoodReads giveaway competition page and also came with a CD which I thought was a nice touch!  If the songs on the CD are anything to go by, then I’m going to really enjoy this book!

Judgement – KEEP!!

I really enjoyed Lily’s House by this author so think this was added to my Kindle around that time as I wanted to read more of her work!! Reading over the blurb and reviews though has left me a little conflicted as to whether this book is for me.

Judgement – GO!!

I do love a good historical fiction book and the blurb for this drew me in.  I’ve not read anything from this author before and she seems to have quite a following so am always interested in finding new authors

Judgement – KEEP!!

Wahoo!!  This being organised lark is fun isn’t it!!! Just wish it could carry over into other aspects of my life!!  Am loving being reminded of books I’d forgotten about and I’m really finding it a great help in becoming more selective over what I read!

Any decisions I’ve made that are wrong??! Always happy to be persuaded to either keep a book, or lose one of those that have made the cut!! Please feel free to comment!!
HAPPY READING!!
