#BookReview DARE TO KNOW by JAMES KENNEDY

ABOUT THE BOOK

Dark Matter meets Annihilation in this mind-bending and emotional speculative thriller set in a world where the exact moment of your death can be predicted–for a price.

Our narrator is the most talented salesman at Dare to Know, a prestigious and enigmatic company in the death-prediction business. While he has mastered the art of death, the rest of his life is an abject failure. Divorced, estranged from his sons, and broke, he’s driven to violate the cardinal rule of his business by forecasting his own death day. The problem: apparently he died 23 minutes ago.

The only person who can confirm his prediction is Julia, the woman he loved and lost during his rise up the ranks of Dare to Know. As he travels across the country to see her, our narrator is forced to confront his past, the choices he’s made, and the terrifying truth about the company he works for–and his role there.

Highly ambitious and totally immersive, this adrenaline-fueled thriller explores the destructive power of knowledge and collapses the boundaries between reality, myth, and conspiracy as it races toward its stunning conclusion.

MY REVIEW

If you  like your books weird, twisty and to be a bit of a mind f***, then this is the book for you!! I loved it! It has the power to entertain, confuse and to make you think…. would you want to know when you were going to die?!

In this book, there’s a group who can predict  your death date and have turned it into a business.  The only rule of the death prediction business is not to calculate your own death date…. the book narrator breaks this rule and is left dealing with the consequences.
It took me a while to get into the style of writing, but once I’d connected with it, I really enjoyed the way the story played out.  The narrator takes you through each stage – as he deals with his disastrous life whilst looking back at those moments in his life that made him who he has become – the school friendships, relationships, his random thoughts and hates.  This is alongside the internal battle he’s having with himself of trying to make sense of it all, and should he do his own death date.  He knows he shouldn’t but just can’t shake the feeling off that he NEEDS to know.

I really enjoyed the frenetic pace of this book – it flits from one thought to another, from the now to the past and you really get a sense of his confused state of mind.  How his arrogance and complacency can be a help and a hindrance!

The twists were well thought out, and I loved the randomness of his mind!  It’s a book that I raced through and loved the uniqueness of it all!  It makes you think outside of the box and challenges you!

#BookReview WHISPER DOWN THE LANE by CLAY McLEOD CHAPMAN @quirkbooks

ABOUT THE BOOK

Inspired by the McMartin preschool trials and the Satanic Panic of the ‘80s, the critically acclaimed author of The Remaking delivers another pulse pounding, true-crime-based horror novel.

Richard doesn’t have a past. For him, there is only the present: a new marriage to Tamara, a first chance at fatherhood to her son Elijah, and a quiet but pleasant life as an art teacher at Elijah’s elementary school in Danvers, Virginia. Then the body of a rabbit, ritualistically murdered, appears on the school grounds with a birthday card for Richard tucked beneath it. Richard doesn’t have a birthday—but Sean does . . .

Sean is a five-year-old boy who has just moved to Greenfield, Virginia, with his mother. Like most mothers of the 1980s, she’s worried about bills, childcare, putting food on the table . . . and an encroaching threat to American life that can take the face of anyone: a politician, a friendly neighbor, or even a teacher. When Sean’s school sends a letter to the parents revealing that Sean’s favorite teacher is under investigation, a white lie from Sean lights a fire that engulfs the entire nation—and Sean and his mother are left holding the match.

Now, thirty years later, someone is here to remind Richard that they remember what Sean did. And though Sean doesn’t exist anymore, someone needs to pay the price for his lies.

MY REVIEW

This is a book that is loosely based on a true crime event and that’s what makes it even more chilling as you read! It’s scary enough to think of the situations as pure fiction, but knowing that the real world can be this horrific just adds to the atmosphere created throughout this story, and it kept me thrilled and chilled on every page!

Richard is an art teacher with no past. He’s a married man with a young child and an art teacher – what could be more normal?! But when the school rabbit is found ritualistically killed on the school field, Richard has a sick sense that this was meant for him to see.

Back in the 1980’s we’re introduced to 5 year old Sean. Life is a struggle for him and his mother, and at school he is the target for bullies. When his mum finds bruises on him, he seems unable to say what happened and she assumes that the teacher was to blame…. Sean could stop the stories before they get out of hand, but he finds he’s being listened to for a change, and the centre of attention… what harm can it do to just go along with the others?

This was a terrifying look at the danger of how things can spiral out of control so quickly, made even more pertinent in the times we live in when people can be ‘cancelled’ and have their lives destroyed on the say so of someone else, whether they are telling the truth or not. The power that people feel over others, with no conscience or thoughts of the consequences involved.

I loved how the story goes back and forwards in time – the way history is repeating itself and those catch your breath moments when the truth starts to unravel. It was often unsettling to read and a real eye opener as to how quickly lives can be destroyed.

It’s terrifying, thrilling and a terrific read!!

#BookReview SIRI, WHO AM I? by SAM TSCHIDA

ABOUT THE BOOK

Mia might look like a Millennial but she was born yesterday. Emerging from a coma with short-term amnesia after an accident, Mia can’t remember her own name until the Siri assistant on her iPhone provides it. Based on her cool hairstyle (undercut with glamorous waves), dress (Prada), and signature lipstick (Chanel), she senses she’s wealthy, but the only way to know for sure is to retrace her steps once she leaves the hospital. Using Instagram and Uber, she arrives at the pink duplex she calls home in posts but finds Max, a cute, off-duty postdoc supplementing his income with a house-sitting gig. He tells her the house belongs to JP, a billionaire with a chocolate empire. A few texts later, JP confirms her wildest dreams: they’re in love, Mia is living the good life, and he’ll be back that weekend.

But as Mia and Max work backward through her Instagram and across Los Angeles to learn more about her, they discover a surprising truth behind her perfect Instagram feed, and evidence that her head wound was no accident. Who was Mia before she woke up in that hospital? And is it too late for her to rewrite her story?

MY REVIEW

I’m sure we’ve all had those moments when we would love to ask the internet ‘who are we’ to make life a little clearer, but for Mia asking Siri is her only way of finding out who she is after an accident finds her in hospital with no memory.

What she finds as she starts trawling through her Insta account is a glamorous and successful life that she led – so why can’t she remember? And why did she end up in hospital in the first place? The detective work begins for her and Max who she finds living at the address she finds her stuff at! And it’s a real rollercoaster for both of them as they begin to retrace her footsteps and put the pieces of the puzzle together so she can work out who she was – and does she like what she finds?!!

Mia is one of those women who you can’t help but like, despite her often shallow behaviour! She is a determined woman despite the drama queen moments! A product of our time I’m sure! A lot of it is for attention! She discovers she has a very wealthy other half, a yacht, expensive accessories but finds herself quickly looking past that to discover the real person – maybe the amnesia is a good thing to help her reset her identity and look past all the trimmings that made up her life before.

Her life soon shows itself to be a lot darker than the airbrushed glamour she once portrayed online, and it was fascinating to see the truth revealed and the extreme measures she has to take to get her life back. The more she digs, the more disturbing her old reality becomes! The Insta shine is well and truly missing from reality!

A fascinating and fast paced book that really resonates with the sugar coated internet world we live in nowadays! Keep it real…. always!!

#BookReview CRYSTAL CLEAR: EXTRAORDINARY TALISMANS FOR EVERYDAY LIFE by JAYA SAXENA #CrystalClear @quirkbooks

ABOUT THE BOOK

From culture writer Jaya Saxena, a personal essay collection that helps you tap into the deeper meaning of crystals—and how to integrate them into your own life.

As Millennials, younger Gen Xers, and older Gen Zers contend with political, economic, and existential distress, a new trend has emerged: the rise of divinatory practices once thought to be the domain of New Age spiritual seekers. Offering a sense of ritual, guidance, and purpose, these practices have gone mainstream at a time when self-care is an important line of defense against the pressures of daily life.

Unlocking the beauty, accessibility, and self-care potential of crystals, Crystal Clear examines the power and possibility of 12 popular stones through personal essays, including

• black tourmaline—and its importance in setting boundaries
• pyrite—and its impact on imposter syndrome
• tiger’s eye—and its role as a tool for living fearlessly

The result is personal, relatable, funny, and poignant—a perfect read for those in search of inspiration and clarity in their lives.

MY REVIEW

This was a wonderfully insightful book that looks into more than just crystals and what they can do for you. The author bares a lot of her soul in these passages as she looks into meanings of different stones along with times in her life that she felt drawn to each rock.

I’ve become fascinated other the past few months by how others have been introduced to the world of crystals and I loved reading about how Jaya became involved in the world of crystals. She looks into the history of the use of crystals through the centuries and exploring why the crystal industry is currently booming. It seems many of us are looking for more spiritual help in our wellbeing.

The book is full of fascinating facts on different stones, alongside great quotes, illustrations and all showed off on soothing shaded colour pages! some of the stones she features are carnelian, citrine, black tourmaline etc and I enjoyed finding out more about each stone and their meaning and uses. Her crystal stories would often take her off on different tangents and that made for a really interesting read finding out her thoughts and opinions on a wider variety of subjects.

It touches on politicial, social and sexist issues alongside imposter syndrome and help with positive thinking so it was a really well rounded book – a little bit of everything! Even the muppets get a mention and that’s always fine by me to see them included!

This book has given me a little more of an insight into various crystals, alongside Jaya as a person and I found it a really fascinating and inspiring book!

#BookReview William Shakespeare’s Get Thee Back to the Future! by Ian Doescher

ABOUT THE BOOK

In the iconic film by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, teenaged Marty McFly travels back in time from the 1980s to the 1950s, changing the path of his parents’ destiny . . . as well as his own. Now fans of the movie can journey back even further—to the 16th century, when the Bard of Avon unveils his latest masterpiece: William Shakespeare’s Get Thee Back to the Future! Every scene and line of dialogue from the hit movie is re-created with authentic Shakespearean rhyme, meter, and stage directions. This reimagining also includes jokes and Easter eggs for movie fans, from Huey Lewis call-outs to the inner thoughts of Einstein (the dog). By the time you’ve finished reading, you’ll be convinced that Shakespeare had a time-traveling DeLorean of his own, speeding to our era so he could pen this time-tossed tale.

MY REVIEW

This is my first of these ‘mash up’ books and with Back to the Future being one of my favourite films I just couldn’t resist picking this up and I loved every single minute of it!

It’s known as ‘Pop Shakespeare’ and I was a little bit sceptical at first as to how the mixing of Shakespeare with a classic movie would work, but it’s all done so brilliantly that you’re transported back to the film – just in Shakespearean verse! If you’re a big fan of the film you’ll love all the little gems from the film that are added, and there are some lovely pencil illustrations included too which add a cute touch! I loved Einsten the dog too – his ‘woofs’ are translated to Shakespearean prose as well!!

If you don’t know the story of Back to the Future – Marty is sent back in time with the help of the Doc and changes the path of his own parents destiny. You can just picture Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd in all their scenes in this book and it was just so much fun to read and I look forward to reading more from this author!
