ABOUT THE BOOK

Keeper of Secrets

Should some secrets stay buried?

For as long as Cassie Hunt can remember her Aunt Aggie has spoken about the forgotten world that exists just below their feet, in the tunnels and catacombs of the Sand House. The story is what inspired Cassie to become an archaeologist.

But Aggie has a secret that she’s buried as deep as the tunnels and when excavation work begins on the site, Cassie is the only one who can help her keep it. With the assistance of her old university friend, Noah Flanagan, she puts into action a plan to honour Aggie’s wishes.

It seems the deeper Noah and Cassie dig, the more shocking the secrets uncovered – and danger is never far away, both above and below the ground …

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lynda is a wife, step-mother and grandmother who grew up in the mining village of Bentley, Doncaster, in South Yorkshire..

She is currently the Sales Director of a stationery, office supplies and office furniture company in Doncaster, where she has worked for the past 28 years. Prior to this she’d also been a nurse, a model, an emergency first response instructor and a PADI Scuba Diving Instructor … and yes, she was crazy enough to dive in the sea with sharks, without a cage.

Following a car accident in 2008, Lynda was left with limited mobility in her right arm. Unable to dive or teach anymore, she turned to her love of writing, a hobby she’d followed avidly since being a teenager.

Her own life story, along with varied career choices, helps Lynda to create stories of romantic suspense, with challenging and unpredictable plots, along with (as in all romances) very happy endings.

She lives in a small rural hamlet near Doncaster, with her ‘hero at home husband’, Haydn, whom she’s been happily married to for over 20 years.

Lynda joined the Romantic Novelists’ Association in 2014 under the umbrella of the New Writers’ Scheme and in 2015 her debut novel House of Secrets won Choc Lit’s Search for a Star competition. Lynda writes for both Choc Lit and Ruby Fiction.

MY REVIEW

This is a book based on a real place, and there’s some fabulous photos and information at the end of the book to shed more light, and this was a wonderful aspect to the whole setting of the story and has made me aware of a place I never knew anything about!

As for the story itself, I found myself totally captivated by Cassie and the drama she found herself involved herself in as she tried to help a beloved family member and shows the lengths you’ll go to help out someone you love.

Cassie has had a very traumatic past. With her sister Lisa, she was bullied as a child and had to deal with tragedy more than she should.  But with the love and support of Aggie, their Aunt, they have managed to move on with their lives and the love that Aggie had for the tunnels and secrets in The Sand House close by, has passed on to Cassie who has become an archeologist.

But Aggie has fallen ill, and wants Cassie to help retrieve something she’s hidden in the tunnels ahead of someone else finding it in a big excavation that is planned for the site.  This leads to some startling revelations as we get to go back in time to hear the story from Aggie, and also to see what took place to Cassie and her family and I loved following all the different storylines.

Working back at home this also brings Cassie back in touch with an old friend, and I loved seeing how their relationship was rekindled and just how protective people were when they knew Cassie could be in danger.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story – I loved the historical aspects which played out nicely alongside the romance and intrigue of just what was so important to Aggie. The bond between them was so touching. In Cassie, there’s a character who was easy to warm to and understand and I loved how there was  a little bit of everything within the pages of this book to keep you entertained, thrilled and shocked!

#BlogTour THE HOUSE THAT ALICE BUILT by CHRIS PENHALL @rararesources @ChocLituk @RubyFiction

A huge delight to be the latest stop on the Blog Tour for THE HOUSE THAT ALICE BUILT! My thanks to the author, publisher and Rachel of Rachel’s Random Resources for putting this all together and letting me be part of it all!

Home is where the heart is …

Alice Dorothy Matthews is sensible. Whilst her best friend Kathy is living it up in Portugal and her insufferable ex Adam is travelling the world, Alice is working hard to pay for the beloved London house she has put her heart and soul into renovating.

But then a postcard from Buenos Aires turns Alice’s life upside down. One very unsensible decision later and she is in Cascais, Portugal, and so begins her lesson in ‘going with the flow’; a lesson that sees her cat-sitting, paddle boarding, dancing on top of bars and rediscovering her artistic talents.

But perhaps the most important part of the lesson for Alice is that you don’t always need a house to be at home.

MY REVIEW

This was a wonderful read with a real feelgood factor!!  I can see why this story won the Search For a Star competition! It has all those elements that keep you as a reader rooting for the main character and cheering when everything falls into place!!

Alice is trudging through her life! Her work is miserable, her ex, Adam, is off round the world and she’s having zero fun! When her friend Kathy flies over from Portugal for a visit she pesters Alice to come and visit her but Alice seems so stuck in her ways that she’s reluctant to go, but things are about to change to leave her with no option but to get packing!!

With the realisation that maybe it’s time to put herself first, Alice finds herself in Portugal to visit Kathy and ends up with a little house/cat sitting job to see her through this new little chapter in her life! What is she going to do with herself?! For someone who likes routine it takes a while to get used to the change, but with the advice of ‘go with the flow’ ringing in her ear she starts to embrace this new way of living!

Her friend Kathy is brilliant in helping Alice find her feet and try new experiences and also makes her remember just how creative she used to be, before life got in the way! She can’t believe how warm and friendly everyone is either! She seems to be getting quite a bit of male attention from very attentive drivers and waiters !! Never a bad thing to have too much attention!!

With new passions to explore and new relationships beginning to blossom, I loved seeing how Alice began to find her happy! She took  back control and even though she often found it easier to run away from her problems whenever the past reared its’ head again, the new confidence she found in herself seemed to make her ready to face anything life could throw at her and this story was just a delight to read throughout!

MY REVIEW

Another stunner of a story from Kathryn and this one had me under its’ spell from page one!  Who hasn’t dreamed of meeting their favourite singer and have them fall in love with them?!!  One of my favourite films is ‘Win A Date with Tad Hamilton’ and this book gave me all those feels!  Superstar celeb meets a ‘normal’ person and sparks fly! And that is exactly what happens to Jessie when she gets to meet Michael on a TV show!

Jessie is a normal kind of woman! Mother to 2 boys ,who love to tease her over her crushes on celebs, her escape in life is trashy TV and fantasizing over sexy blokes! One of which is Michael Tennant who is a dreamy star Tenor!  When a new TV show is announced where a singer is paired up with a ‘non singer’ (to put it politely!), her boys apply on her behalf and she gets chosen!!  She’s excited and petrified in equal measures but knows this is a chance to get more from her very beige life! Time to start living!

As often happens, it’s not the greatest of first meetings between them for the show but once they’re at ease with one another and there’s something about her that has Michael smitten! That thing is not her voice though, but seeing them rehearse together is really sweet and as they get to spend more time with one another, the attraction on both sides is clear for all to see.

The TV show becomes a very small part of the book as their story explores the downsides of dating a celebrity who is away touring so much and the different circles that they both live in.    Is she ready for the press attention? Is she just a passing attraction for him? I really enjoyed seeing these different aspects of a relationship explored.

Their chemistry is amazing and I was just willing for them to find a way to make things work.  For him it seemed nice to spend time with someone dealing with normal life, not the normally shallow  and fame hungry women he meets, and for her she got to see the man behind the image and the glamour.

Full of fun and romance – I loved it!!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rosie has been scribbling stories ever since she was little. Back then, they were rip-roaring adventure tales with a young heroine in perilous danger of falling off a cliff or being tied up by ‘the baddies’.

Thankfully, Rosie has moved on somewhat, and now much prefers to write romantic comedies that melt your heart and make you smile, with really not much perilous danger involved at all – unless you count the heroine losing her heart in love.

Rosie’s brand new series of novellas is centred around life in a village cafe. The latest, ‘Bonfires & Hot Chocolate at the Little Duck Pond Cafe’, is out now.

Watch out for ‘A Winter Wedding at the Little Duck Pond Cafe’, which will be published Christmas 2019. Rosie is also writing a full-length, standalone book for Christmas 2019, entitled ‘Snowflakes over Moondance Cottage’.

MY REVIEW

It is fair to say that I love this series, and just when you think it can’t get any better – it does!!!

The latest installment features Primrose, a woman with quirky fashion sense and on a mission to find her grandmother as she’s feeling very alone and just wants some answers to questions that have bugged her for years.

She’s found plenty to keep her days busy and put a smile on her face with working at the cafe, and dog walking, and soon there’s someone else making her happy as she grows closer to Callum who is new to the village. She’s been treated bad by an ex so she’s happy not to rush into anything dating wise!

The community are also brought together to support Fen who is appearing on TV in a baking show, and I love how they all turn up to watch it together!

With Primrose delving into the past to uncover some truths, she’s really pushed through the ringer emotionally and I even found myself getting quite teary at times!  The more that she uncovers too, the more she finds extra support from someone else who isn’t Callum!  What a dilemma to have!!

The author has created such a wonderful set of characters that you can really connect to.  It’s so great to catch up with various people with each new novella, but they can easily be read as a standalone if you’ve not visited The Little Duck Pond Cafe before!  I adored this latest installment and cannot shout loudly enough about how much I think everyone should visit The Little Duck Pond Cafe series!

MY REVIEW

I’m finding it rather refreshing to  pick up more books nowadays that feature characters who aren’t just fresh out of school, or dealing with life in their 20’s and in Flora Air we meet a woman who is dreaming of being a writer but working in a mundane day job.  She’s also starting to show symptoms of menopause and all that entails – the lack of sleep, the self doubt – and this story follows her as she tries to write the story she knows she’s got in her and how a chance meeting starts to see her life turn in a new direction.

Professor Jolly is a teacher of creative writing and coming to terms with his wife being poorly in hospital. He seems genuinely interested in Flora and her writing and it’s touching to see their friendship blossom – they’re both lonely souls and it seems fitting that they find one another in this way.   Having another person give her feedback on her writing seems to spur her on and her outlook becomes more positive and she finally starts to believe in herself and what she could achieve.

This was a really easy to read story that just came to life for me when the magical elements were introduced!  I’ve found myself wanting my books on my shelves to come to life in the same way that they do in this book – I’m still waiting but hoping!! Maybe they wait until I’m fast asleep……

I really enjoyed spending time with Flora and how having someone believe in her helped push her on to achieve her dream and help her overcome the other issues in her life.  Well worth a look if you’re after a book with a lovely magical feel!

#BlogTour #BookReview A Right Royal Face-Off by Simon Edge #Giveaway @rararesources @EyeAndLightning

A huge delight to be the latest stop on the Blog Tour for A RIGHT ROYAL FACE-OFF by SIMON EDGE.  My thanks to the author, publisher and Rachel of Rachel’s Random Resources for the copy of the book and putting this tour together – and letting me be part of it all!

There’s also a chance for you to win a copy of this book too!! I do spoil you……..

A Right Royal Face-Off

It is 1777, and England’s second-greatest portrait artist, Thomas Gainsborough, has a thriving practice a stone’s thrown from London’s royal palaces, while the press talks up his rivalry with Sir Joshua Reynolds, the pedantic theoretician who is the top dog of British portraiture.

Fonder of the low life than high society, Gainsborough loathes pandering to grand sitters, but he changes his tune when he is commissioned to paint King George III and his large family. In their final, most bitter competition, who will be chosen as court painter, Tom or Sir Joshua?

Meanwhile, two and a half centuries later, a badly damaged painting turns up on a downmarket antiques TV show being filmed in Suffolk. Could the monstrosity really be, as its eccentric owner claims, a Gainsborough? If so, who is the sitter? And why does he have donkey’s ears?

Mixing ancient and modern as he did in his acclaimed debut The Hopkins Conundrum, Simon Edge takes aim at fakery and pretension in this highly original celebration of one of our greatest artists.

MY REVIEW

If you are looking for a book that is the perfect antidote to the miserable, crazy world we currently live in, then you’ve come to the right place!!  This is a Georgian comedy about Thomas Gainsborough  and his rival painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds – if you thought the art world was stuffy and dull then think again!  It’s a book that made me smile and chuckle on numerous occasions and I just adored spending time with these characters and wondering where the story would take me!

It’s a dual timeline story – from the present time when a new antiques show is about to debut on TV and they’re looking to spice things up, to the past where we see Thomas dealing with royalty and rivalry on a grand scale!  There’s also letters we get to read from the past as we read the Georgian goings on from the point of view of David, a servant to the master painter and he has a whole different take on events at work, as he reports back to his family and let them know about a world they can’t even  begin to imagine!

Gainsborough is a  wonderful character! He almost seems to resent having to paint portraits but it pays the bills and he wants to be #1 – not easy when Sir Joshua seems to be flavour of the month! I loved the behind the scenes  goings on too at a sitting for a painting – the royal family gossiping and complaining about life as they chat with him!

In the present we get to witness how the world of TV operates, especially reality shows who try and use the public and humiliate them – when Muriel Mudge takes a painting along to be valued they think they’ve struck gold with her absurd claim but they’re soon the ones eating humble pie when she digs in her heels and refuses to speak to them as they try and make amends when doubts start to creep in!

The whole flow of this book was just pitched perfectly! There’s a great balance between the two timelines and so much to keep you entertained and intrigued! Just why is there a painting of a man with donkey ears?!  You can tell that the author has had so much fun with creating this storyline as it really comes across and his imagination has run riot!

A blast to read and quite touching too at times! It’s a book that has a little bit of everything from history, to mystery to satire and it  is one I highly recommend to everyone!
